The 9/11 Families Deserve Their Day in Court Against Saudi Arabia

by Robert Naiman, Truthout | Op-Ed – This week the House and Senate are expected to vote on whether to override the president’s veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terror Act (JASTA). JASTA would allow 9/11 families to sue Saudi Arabia over allegations Saudi officials were linked to the 9/11 attacks. The bill makes no judgment about Saudi Arabia’s responsibility for the 9/11 attacks. It just removes Saudi Arabia’s immunity from lawsuit over support for terrorist attacks on US soil. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders both support the bill. Under current US law, Americans can sue Iran for terrorism in US courts, but they can’t sue Saudi Arabia for terrorism in US courts, because Iran is on the State Department’s “state sponsor of terror” list and Saudi Arabia is not. The State Department is allowed to take “broader US foreign policy interests” besides concern about support for terrorism into...

Trump Achieves New Personal Best in Debate: A Lie Every 2.65 Minutes

by Joan McCarter – Donald Trump went for the liar’s gold in Monday’s debate, and scored. Last week he clocked an impressive rate of lying at one falsehood every 3.25 minutes of his public speeches, interviews, and tweets. He blew that record out of the water on Monday night. According to the Toronto Star’s count, he had 34 lies in roughly 90 minutes. Doing the math on that, it’s a lie every 2.65 minutes. That’s pretty damned impressive, in a really bad, non-presidential kind of way. But still. It helps that he racked up three alone in the discussion of whether or not he supported the invasion of Iraq (he did). There were two on his taxes: “you don’t learn that much from tax returns,” and “as soon as the audit’s finished, it will be released” (he’s also not releasing returns that aren’t under audit). Two of the lies were about his...

Trump Has Been Sued Repeatedly For Disabilities Violations At His Properties

by April Hamlin – Throughout the past 19 years, Donald Trump has been sued no less than eight times for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act at his various properties, and has done his best to drag out these cases for as long as possible. In addition, a federal inspection at one of his properties also turned up multiple ADA violations. Five of the cases ended in a settlement and two others were resolved in consent decrees that required Trump to make modifications to the properties to bring them into compliance with the ADA. One ended when both sides requested the case be dismissed and another was brought to a close in a bankruptcy. Christine Da Silva, a Trump Hotels spokeswoman, claims that Trump works very hard and spends lots of money to make sure his buildings are accessible to people with disabilities. “It is the policy at all of...

Trump’s Fear Mongering and Racist Lies about Crime in America

by Josie Duffy Rice – Over the past few months, Donald Trump has blustered on and on about violent crime, promoting the false narrative that crime in America is vastly out of control and only getting worse.  It’s another Trump lie, a misleading story he tells to stoke fear as he crowns himself the “law-and-order” candidate. Unsurprisingly, he repeated those three words over and over again last night. From the debate: Secretary Clinton doesn’t want to use a couple of words and that’s law and order. And we need law and order. If we don’t have it, we’re not going to have a country. And when I look at what’s going on in Charlotte, the city I love, the city where I have investments, when I look at what’s going on throughout various parts of our country, whether it’s…I can keep naming them all day long — we need law and order in our country.  We have...

Chris Christie ‘Laughed’ When Told of Bridge Plot, Top Official Testifies

by Nika Knight – Witness in “Bridgegate” hearing testifies that New Jersey governor was pleased to learn of bridge lane closures, part of revenge plot to punish mayor who didn’t endorse Christie, while they were happening. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was told about the 2013 George Washington Bridge lane closures during a 9/11 memorial ceremony the week the closures were happening—and laughed when he heard the news. That’s according to testimony in federal court from David Wildstein, the man who orchestrated the closings in his former role as interstate capital projects director for Port Authority, during a hearing on Tuesday. The closures caused catastrophic traffic delays, and emails between the Republican governor’s staffers revealed that they were part of a revenge plot to punish the mayor of Fort Lee, New Jersey, for not endorsing Christie’s candidacy for governor. During the trial that began that began earlier this month, local outlet...

Judge Orders Voter Suppressor Kris Kobach to Explain Why he Should not be Held in Contempt

by Kira Lerner – The Kansas secretary of state has continues to deny voter registrations without proof of citizenship. A federal judge on Monday ordered Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach to appear at a hearing where he’ll have to explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt for failing to register eligible voters who haven’t provided proof of citizenship. In a hearing on Friday, the notorious voter suppressor will have to explain why he is not complying with a May court injunction requiring his state to register all eligible citizens who apply at the Department of Motor Vehicles, regardless of whether they can provide a proof of citizenship document. Kobach has suspended or cancelled more than 30,000 would-be voters’ registrations because they were unable to provide proof of citizenship when they registered to vote at the DMV. After the federal judge ruled against Kobach in May, the American Civil Liberties...

Giuliani Already Trying To Float Excuses For Trump To Weasel Out Of Future Debates

by Shannon Barber – Anyone watching Monday night’s highly charged presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump knows that Hillary cleaned Trump’s clock. Of course, Trump’s ego will never let him admit that he lost to Hillary, so his surrogates are already being deployed all over the place to spin his embarrassingly terrible debate performance into something positive. The verbal gymnastics there are astounding, but of course these people are Donald Trump surrogates, so they are used to spinning faster than the head of the girl in The Exorcist. One Trump surrogate, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, is taking things a step further, though, and trying to float the idea that Trump should refuse to do future debates with Hillary. Of course, this is just a cowardly move because of Trump’s abysmal performance. But Giuliani is the Trump Spinner-in-Chief, and instead decided to blame the fact that NBC...

ACLU Urges Mass. Court to Vacate 24,000 Drug Cases Based on Tainted Lab Evidence

by C.J. Ciaramella – Annie Dookhan tainted an estimated one in six drug cases in Massachusetts over a nine-year period. The ACLU says all those cases should be thrown out. A single bad chemist corrupted an estimated one in six drug convictions in Massachusetts between 2003 and 2012, throwing the state’s legal system into havoc. The only way to properly fix it, the American Civil Liberties Union argued in a brief to the state’s high court on Friday, is to vacate thousands of convictions based on her work. The ACLU is asking the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to vacate more than 24,000 drug convictions based on tainted evidence from one of the biggest drug lab scandals in the country. When state chemist Annie Dookhan pled guilty in 2012 to falsifying positive results in thousands of drug samples over a nine-year period, it set off a massive review of possibly compromised cases,...

Wells Fargo’s Predatory Practices Are More Than Petty Frauds

by Deena Zaidi, Truthout | Op-Ed – In the wake of the financial crisis of 2008, would-be reformers of Wall Street have largely focused on the problems with letting big financial institutions mix commercial banking with investment banking. But the most recent banking scandal — the revelation that Wells Fargo employees created millions of fake accounts for their customers in order to meet their sales targets — is a reminder that big banks have an enormous drive to misbehave, even within the strict realm of traditional banking activities. Big banks like Wells Fargo will continue to behave badly so long as they are allowed to quietly settle such “massive frauds” by paying fines that sound huge to ordinary people but in actuality are trivial to the banks. Wells Fargo is not the only big bank plagued by scandals. Other leading banks, such as JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup and...

Trump Praises Egypt’s Autocratic President, says they have a lot of ‘Chemistry’

by Adrienne Mahsa Varkiani – Just days after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump sat down with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, he called him a “fantastic guy.” “I thought it was very productive,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News on Wednesday, after being asked about his meeting with Sisi in New York on Monday, on the sidelines of the U.N. Summit for Refugees and Migrants. “He’s a fantastic guy. He took control of Egypt, and he really took control of it, and I thought it was a great meeting. We met for a long time, actually. We had a long meeting, and got along. There was a good chemistry there.” Trump went on to praise Sisi as someone who took control of the “tremendous problem” of terrorists in Egypt. “I’ll tell you, he took control of the country, he has gotten the terrorists out and wiped them out, and...

Every Bat Sh*t Crazy Thing That Came Out Of Trump’s Mouth In The First Debate

by April Hamlin – Donald Trump spent Monday night making a total ass out of himself in the first presidential debate. We were all waiting to see just what would happen tonight, and it was quite the spectacle. From lies to self-incrimination, watching the GOP nominee’s performance was the equivalent of one facepalm after another. So here you go, a complete list of every batshit crazy thing that came out of Donald Trump’s mouth during the first presidential debate: “There’s nobody in our government to fight them , and we have a very good fight, and we have a winning fight.”   “They’re using our country as a piggy bank to rebuild China and many other countries are doing the same thing.”   “We have to stop these countries from stealing our companies.”   “Our country’s in deep trouble.  We don’t know what we’re doing with devaluations… Especially when it comes to China, they’re...

This was the Most Important Moment of the First Presidential Debate (VIDEO)

by Judd Legum – The moment. In 90 minutes, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were able to cover a lot of ground. From the economy to racism to Iraq to criminal justice, the candidates sparred on the stage for the first time. But the lasting impact of the debate come from a few moments that persist in the public consciousness long after most of the debate is forgotten. In Tuesday night’s debate, that moment came during a discussion of Trump’s tax returns. Trump is the first candidate in 40 years who refuses to release his returns. Clinton suggested that Trump wasn’t releasing them because the returns would show he paid no taxes at all. Clinton noted a couple of older returns from the 1980s, that were disclosed through casino regulators, showed he paid no taxes. “That makes me smart,” Trump replied. Notably, Trump doesn’t deny that his returns would show he paid...

Paul LePage’s Binder Full of Drug Dealers is Mostly White People After All

by Alan Pyke – The part about keeping a binder was true. The rest, not so much. Flagrantly racist off-hand remarks to the public are something of a hobby for Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R). But at a meeting in August, LePage alloyed his blanket pronouncements with a hard number, claiming that more than 90 percent of those arrested for selling drugs in his state this year are black or latino. That’s not true, according to the personal binder LePage maintained on drug arrests, which was obtained and published by the Portland Press-Herald on Monday. More than half of the mugshots in LePage’s binder are of white people. The three-ring binder is made up of cut-and-pasted reports from communications staffers and police employees describing drug cases going back to the start of this year. There are 142 named arrestees or suspects in the 148-page document. There is no accompanying photograph for almost...

Critical Flint Aid Held Hostage as Congressional Showdown Looms

by Deirdre Fulton – “Have Congressional Republicans forgotten about Flint? Or maybe it’s that they just don’t really care.” Even as Flint residents continue to struggle to provide clean drinking water for their families, Republican lawmakers in the House and Senate appear to be thumbing their noses at the Michigan city, excluding Flint assistance from a must-pass spending bill ahead of (yet another) congressional recess. “Have Congressional Republicans forgotten about Flint?” The Flint Journal wrote in an editorial on Monday. “Or maybe it’s that they just don’t really care.” News outlets reported late last week that the Senate’s proposed Continuing Resolution (CR)—a short-term funding agreement that would keep the government operating after the current budget expires on October 1—did not include emergency funding for the beleaguered community that has been grappling with a long-term lead-contamination crisis. The proposal did include flood assistance for states such as Louisiana and Maryland. House Speaker...

Is Trump’s Campaign Manager Kellyanne Conway Completely Out of Her Mind?

by mdm4039 – At first glance Kellyanne Conway would seem like a modern day success story. She is a lawyer who clerked for a judge out of law school in the nation’s capital. She spent four years as an adjunct professor at a law school.  She co-authored a book. These achievements would be enough for most to rest comfortably on their laurels in the sanctuary of the upper-middle class  rewarded with  prestige from  peers and one’s community alike.  Kellyanne, however, was just getting started. She then worked for Luntz polling company, a right-wing pollster who gave us such imaginative misnomers  as the “Death Tax” as a substitute for the more benign sounding inheritance tax in order to make the tax appear completely sinister when in actuality it falls on a minuscule percentage of only the very wealthy.  Conway then founded her own polling firm. There she did work for several notable politicians on the right including Ronald Reagan...

U.N. Report: Police Killings Of Black Men In U.S. Is ‘Human Rights Crisis’ Reminiscent Of Lynching

by April Hamlin – The epidemic of black men being killed at the hands of police officers in America has not gone unnoticed on the international stage. According to a report by a United Nations working group, which will be debated at the U.N. Human Rights Council on Monday, this situation constitutes a full-blown “human rights crisis” that is reminiscent of the days of lynchings. “Contemporary police killings and the trauma that they create are reminiscent of the past racial terror of lynching,” said the report by the U.N. Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. The U.N. report draws a stark comparison between modern day fatal shootings at the hands of law enforcement and the lynchings of blacks that swept the nation in the 19th and 20th centuries. The report comes as racial tensions in America have boiled over yet again in the wake of more deadly shootings that...

Doctors In Canada Get The Green Light To Prescribe Heroin

by JULIE FIDLER – Meanwhile, the DEA won’t even legalize medical cannabis across the U.S. Medical marijuana is legal in about half of the United States, and the DEA missed its chance to legalize it on the national level when it passed on rescheduling marijuana this past summer. But in Canada, doctors have been given the green light to prescribe heroin to severely addicted patients. Are we living in a parallel universe or something? New rules that went into effect last week allow doctors in Canada to apply to Health Canada – the nation’s health department – for access to medical-grade heroin to prescribe to specific patients. The government-run Special Access Program approves the requests on a case-by-case basis. The medical-grade heroin – called diacetylmorphine – can only be prescribed to severe addicts for whom most other treatments have failed. The new regulations state: “Having access to diacetylmorphine will provide...

Eight-Year-Old Gives Her Hot Meal To A Homeless Man, Then 2 Weeks Later This Happens

by Amanda Froelich – Thanks to an eight-year-old’s generous heart, an estranged homeless man may soon reconnect with his family. Ella Scott had no idea her kindness would ripple out and affect millions when she offered a homeless man her dinner of steak and potatoes, but that’s exactly what happened. The video (below) shows the kind activist noticing a homeless man on the street as she and her father, Eddie Scott, dined at the Lallapalooza restaurant in Monterey, California. With little hesitation, she asked her father if she could give her meal to the man who looked hungry. Of course, her father said yes. Soon after, he uploaded the video to Facebook which has been shared over 40 million times. Eddie told the press: “Ella has always had a big heart. Whenever we pass homeless people on the street, she always asks me for money to give to them.” The...

Attention, Lester Holt: Hillary Campaign Releases 19 Page List of Fact-Checked Trump Lies

by Oliver Tiger – FoxSpews Senior Talking Head Chris Wallace has made it clear he will not be fact-checking anyone at the last Presidential debate… and Donald Trump approves that message: LARRY KING (HOST): Chris Wallace of Fox News is going to moderate the final debate. He says he doesn’t believe it’s his job to be the truth squad, that it’s up to the candidates to catch each other. Do you think the moderator should have facts at hands and correct the guest? DONALD TRUMP: Well, I don’t know. I can tell you, Chris Wallace is a professional. He’s very, very good at what he does. And you know, I can understand him saying that but yeah, I think — I think that the candidates should police themselves. And as we all know, The Donald is an absolute EXPERT at policing himself. He’s certainly an expert at policing Hillary Clinton, calling her a...

President Obama Hammers Trump For Claiming Black People Are Worse Off Today

by Stephen D Foster Jr – Donald Trump thinks African-Americans are worse off now than they have ever been, and President Obama just took him to the woodshed for it. During a rally, Trump declared that “African-American communities are absolutely in the worst shape than they’ve ever been in before.” The assertion suggests that slavery was a picnic for black people and that Jim Crow was heaven on earth. But President Obama set Trump straight during an interview with Good Morning America at the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture. “You know, I think even most 8-year-olds’ll tell you that whole slavery thing wasn’t very good for black people,” Obama told Robin Roberts. “Jim Crow wasn’t very good for black people. What we have to do is use our history to propel us to make more progress in the future.” Here’s the video via ABC President Obama also slammed...
