It has been confirmed that the hacker collective known as Anonymous is behind a massive cyber-attack that targeted several websites owned by the Canadian federal government. Anonymous is claiming responsibility for the attack. The attack was part of a protest against Canada’s new “anti-terror” legislation, Bill C-51. The attack took down several key government websites and e-mails.

Last Wednesday, Anonymous posted a video to YouTube calling for massive action against the Bill C-51 and the Harper administration. They say in the video:

“Greetings citizens of Canada, we are Anonymous. Today, this 17 of June 2015, we launched an attack against the Canadian senate and government of Canada websites in protest against the recent passing of bill C-51. A bill which is a clear violation of the universal declaration of human rights, as well as removing our legal protections that have stood, enshrined in the Magna Carta for 800 years. Perhaps it was fate that the day the Magna Carta arrived in our country to go on display for the populace was the same day our corrupt government was symbolically pissing upon it, and us all. Bill C-51 targets minority groups and dissidents alike, both being strong parts of a healthy democracy. Do we trade our privacy for security? Do we bow down and obey what has become totalitarian rule?”

Here is the video, which has some NSFW language.

Bill C-51 has touted as a bill meant to be used to fight terrorism. In reality, it is like the Patriot Act on steroids, and topped with a huge dose of racism. The Canadian government was once revered as an example of a function liberal government in North America. However, since the Harper regime took power it is starting to look like a totalitarian right-wing state, bent on destroying the land and the people who live on it. Bill C-51 is one of the most egregious examples of the new oil state’s decline into right-wing totalitarianism.

Here is a good short video that explains why people in Canada are rising up against Bill C -51. You can find more in-depth analysis on what the legislation means for Canada by heading over to the #StopC51 website.
