Boehner Heading To Israel For ‘Victory Celebration’ With Netanyahu

Speaker of the House John Boehner is planning to visit Israel ten days after the country’s election to have a “victory celebration” with his best buddy, Benjamin Netanyahu. Senior Israeli officials, who asked not to be identified, imparted the news to the daily paper Haaretz.

The trip was reportedly secretly planned while Netanyahu was in the United States at Boehner’s invitation, and still has not been publicly announced. It will begin on March 31st. Apparently, neither of these men ever wants to have a working relationship with the President of the United States.

The administration has given a number of press briefings to Haaretz since Tuesday’s election. The White House message is that if Netanyahu has any interest in repairing the damage, he needs to take some major, concrete steps. The first one would be replacing Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Ron Dormer. Dormer plotted with Boehner to arrange Netanyahu’s anti-Iran, anti-peace speech to Congress in early March.

Netanyahu is in deep trouble internationally for his race-baiting comments during the election that included a disavowal of the two-state solution to the illegal occupation of Palestine. In response, Great Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has asked Prime Minister David Cameron to recognize the state of Palestine.

Daniel Levy, an official with the European Council on Foreign Relations, said of the peace process between the Palestinians and Israel:

They were already skating on thin ice and now Netanyahu has taken a pick-axe to it.

He added a note of disbelief about the fact that Netanyahu stirred the fear of Arab voters in order to turn out his supporters. Levy said:

It’s unbelievable. Can you imagine a European or American politician saying ‘Vote for me because the Jews or the blacks are voting in droves’? Even the far-right can’t say that.

Actually, Republicans have come close to it with their drive to limit the voting rights of blacks and other minorities throughout the United States. John Boehner and Bibi Netanyahu are beginning to look like a matched set. Their mutual admiration society will be in full view of the world come March 31st.

Many wizened observers of the two-faced Israeli Prime Minister warned that Bibi would do yet another about-face on the two-state solution as soon as he won the election. Indeed, on Thursday, he told NBC:

I don’t want a one-state solution. I want a sustainable, peaceful two-state solution. But for that, circumstances have to change.

Circumstances certainly do have to change. The United States has a duplicitous Republican leader conspiring with an unreliable liar to undermine peace on two fronts — with Palestine and regarding Iran. President Obama has been indicating a willingness to take action without either of them, including the possibility of letting the United Nations Security Council proceed with a two-state solution of its own.

The American people have shown strong support for the President in the face of the manipulative alliance between Congressional Republicans and Netanyahu. How ironic would this outcome be: If the threat of a foreign leader conspiring with lawmakers to undermine our government finally put the ‘united’ back into the United States of America?
