Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

After eleven and a half hours of deliberation, jurors on the trial of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev have found him guilty on all 30 counts, 17 of which carry the possibility of the death penalty. The death penalty will be decided during the penalty phase of the trial.

There is no death penalty in the state of Massachusetts, but because this was a federal case, it is on the table.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aloke Chakravarty said during his closing argument to the jurors:

“There was nothing about this day that was a twist of fate. . . This was a cold, calculated terrorist act. This was intentional. It was bloodthirsty. It was to make a point. It was to tell America that ‘We will not be terrorized by you anymore. We will terrorize you.’”

Massachusetts State Police Colonel Timothy P. Alben said:

“On the occasion of today’s guilty verdict in U.S. District Court, the collective thoughts of the entire Massachusetts State Police are with the victims, survivors and families of those maimed by these cowardly acts of terrorism. . . In today’s verdict, we hope to turn another page in the recovery and healing of our community. We are hopeful that in justice, those that have been injured may find some sense of peace.”

The attack, which happened in April of 2013, took the lives of three people, including a small child, and injured 260, many of whom lost limbs. Tsarnaev was also involved in the killing of an MIT security officer in the days following the attack.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said:

“I hope today’s verdict provides a small amount of closure for the survivors, families, and all impacted by the violent and tragic events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon… The incidents of those days have forever left a mark on our City. As we remember those who lost so much, we reflect on how tragedy revealed our deepest values, and the best of who we are as a community.”
