Florida Republican Rips Koch Brothers A New One During Senate Hearing

A Florida Republican had the guts to tear into the Koch Brothers and their cronies during a Senate hearing on Thursday for wanting prosperity for themselves instead of for the people.

As the committee heard testimony regarding a bill that would provide tax incentives for the film industry to produce television and movies in the state, a lobbyist for the Koch-backed Americans For Prosperity spoke out in opposition.

Of course, persuading the film industry to bring more projects to Florida would generate revenues for the local economy and create jobs. In short, it would help bring some prosperity to the lives of thousands of Floridians. But this apparently isn’t the goal of AFP, which is why one Republican senator used her time to slam the Koch Brothers and Americans For Prosperity for only wanting prosperity for themselves.

According to the Miami Herald, GOP state Senator Nancy Detert was only too happy to use the extra time waived by AFP lobbyist Skylar Zander to rip his organization and its wealthy benefactors a new one.

“I appreciate the mail-outs that you do against me on a monthly basis that say I give money to Hollywood moguls, which, of course, I don’t have any money to give, and neither does the state of Florida give money to Hollywood moguls. You’re all on the Koch brothers’ payroll. Good for you. I’m glad you’re all employed … I hope you’re getting paid a lot of money to show up to these meetings and say meaningless things. Obviously you’re for prosperity for yourself and not anyone else … You people serve absolutely no purpose.”

It’s refreshing to see a Republican call out the greedy power-hungry Koch brothers for they are. Of course, it’s pretty obvious that Charles and David Koch will use their power to retaliate against Detert when she comes up for re-election. After all, the Kochs desire absolute obedience. They simply won’t tolerate a Republican who stands up to them on behalf of the people. If only more Republicans had the guts to stand up to the Kochs, perhaps we wouldn’t be watching our democracy slip away as a few billionaires try to buy power with their piggy banks.

On a final note, it’s also refreshing to hear a positive story coming out of Florida.
