GOPer’s Bright Idea: Let’s Pass A Bunch Of Terrible Bills So Obama Looks Bad For Vetoing Them

A Republican congressman excitedly described his plans to derail President Obama’s legacy and inadvertently made the case that Washington’s political dysfunction lies squarely on the shoulders of the GOP.

Speaking with a group of conservative voters in Arizona, Rep. Paul Gosar laid out his agenda. It was light on economic growth, solutions to poverty, or fighting for better healthcare. In fact, it includes just one goal: Destroy President Obama.

A visibly bitter Gosar recognized that the 6-year dream Republicans had of some day impeaching Obama was becoming fairly remote, so he explained how the agenda of the GOP needs to shift to simply ruining Obama’s presidency in an effort to “win.” Win what exactly? Just win.

To do this Gosar concedes the GOP will need to be intentionally impossible to work with – even if that means sacrificing the greater good. For example, Gosar says it’s his mission to block any nomination Obama offers, sight unseen:

“You may not be able to impeach a president,” he said. “But boy I tell you what: remember, we have the right of advise and confer. Nobody gets confirmed. Nada. Nobody. None. I don’t care how good of a person you are. You’re not gonna get it.” [source]

Why? Well, because Gosar doesn’t like Obama, and particularly the fact that he is still president, and this is the punishment he came up with.

However, Gosar was just getting started. With a grin, he explained that the key to destroying the Democrats and ruining Obama’s legacy was to ensure that Obama went down in history as the president who “vetoed the most bills.”

“Imagine this. Just imagine this,” the Congressman said. “Barack Obama goes down as the president who vetoed the most bills and in the succeeding election cost his party another election.”

Unfortunately, Obama isn’t cooperating with this plan – he’s only vetoed four bills to date, about 631 shy of America’s record holder, Franklin D. Roosevelt. To inflate that number, Gosar wants Republicans to start sending a flood of bills, any bills, to Obama’s desk.

“Think about these appropriation [bills], we don’t need 60 votes, we only need 54. Start putting these bills on his desk and make him veto.”

And it would help if the legislation was either so reckless or so partisan that Obama had no choice but to veto them. If this sounds like the kind of plan a comic book villian would dream up in a brainstorming session and promptly dismiss as being too silly, then you haven’t been paying attention. Again, Gosar’s point isn’t to actually pass legislation (i.e. his job), it’s to ensure Obama looks bad. If it takes Congress sending Obama 632 terrible bills to do it, then Gosar is willing to make that sacrifice.

If nothing else, Gosar’s comments demonstrate how antagonistic the Republican Party has become recently. It’s no surprise Gosar cites Sun Tzu, an ancient Chinese military general, throughout his speech. He’s not working to better the country, Gosar is at war with an “adversary” and he intends to “win.” It’s why the claim that politicians on “both sides” – Democrat and Republican – are equally toxic rings so hollow. Consumed with destroying President Obama, the Republican Party has completely removed itself from the national conversation. They can’t govern because they don’t want to – they only want to destroy the ones that do.
