President Obama Is Making 2015 A Great Year, And Here’s How

Barack Obama

It’s a good thing we have websites like and Politifact to call out the GOP on their lies regarding President Obama and his accomplishments. While Republicans are harping on, asking “where are the jobs?” and accusing him of making our economy even worse than it was before, has compiled a handy list on the numbers in our country, from how many jobs have been added to the rate of petroleum exports. While some of the numbers aren’t flattering, many of them tear apart right wing talking points.

From the original summary of’s website:

  • Under Obama, the economy has added 7.2 million jobs, and the unemployment rate is now lower than the historical median.
  • The number of job openings is up to its highest point in 14 years, and the number of long-term jobless has now dropped below where it was when Obama took office.
  • Real weekly earnings are up 3 percent. But the number of persons receiving food stamps remains stubbornly high.
  • The administration says 16 million have gained health insurance as a result of the Affordable Care Act. But the National Center for Health Statistics estimates that 37 million others still lacked coverage last year.
  • The US increased its domestic crude oil production last year by more than it has in over 100 years. The U.S. now relies less on imported oil than it has since the Nixon administration.
  • The clock has run out on Obama’s promise to double U.S. exports in 5 years. They went up only 39 percent.

Okay, so we have 7.2 million jobsearnings up by 3 percent, 16 million newly insured Americans, the lowest foreign oil dependence since the 1970’s, and job openings are at their highest points since 2001. On the flipside, we still have a lot of Americans on food stamps, and instead of doubling U.S. exports, it has only gone up 39 percent. Not too bad, if you ask me. There is one thing that will help get Americans off of food stamps – raising the minimum wage – but that is besides the point.

What is even better regarding jobs is the fact that the jobless rate is now better than it ever ha been since 1948, where the historical median has been 5.6 percent. The current unemployment rate is 5.5 percent. It maxed out at 10 percent in October 2009. The rate of those who have been seeking jobs for 27 weeks or more – long term unemployment – has dropped to lower levels than President Obama inherited. The number of businesses opening (the most recent period on record being the three months after June 2014) grew at 18 percent, with 220,000 new establishments opening. The amount of businesses shutting down has decreased 18 percent.

It’s also worth noting that big business is soaring under the Obama Administration:

  • Corporate profits are up 174 percent since he took office in 2009
  • The highest profits ever recorded for big corporations were in the third quarter of 2014
  • The biggest businesses, together, have over $1.8 trillion in profits at the end of 2014

When it comes to the “job killing, health insurance destroying Obamacare,” roughly 11.9 percent of all Americans lacked health insurance which is down from 14.4 percent in 2013.

Everything the GOP has old us, all their horror stories of this “socialist, Marxist, communist” President, is all a huge façade because they are so scared of the public learning about his accomplishments. Yes, the debt has swelled under him, but the deficit is rapidly decreasing. As I said before, thanks to fact checking websites who actually gather the data, right-wing talking points are easily destroyed in a matter of a sentence.
