Bad day for photography with hazy skies, and bad lighting, but a chance encounter made it worth the while! This old man of the desert tucked himself in to his shell at first, but I sat on a nearby rock and waited patently. He’s an old one, the shell is about 18 inches across.

Another good day to keep at shutting down the yard…80 dry degrees…60 some odd tomorrow. And the leaves are just starting to turn! Happy WE, here we come…

    • missj

doesn’t look like that warmth is going to make it out here….
hope I have time to clean up things when I get home before the cool/damp sets in …. just drives my allergies CRAZY!

  • Wildkitty

    Morning ALL! Guess what ——–

I came downstairs this morning to find my Living Room fireplace burning brightly – and my house is ‘nice and warm’!

Sun is bright and temps in the low 50Fs and, when I got home from my coffee up the hill I found that I had ‘inherited’ a 1966 Lincoln. I cleaned out the garage the other day and I guess my neighbor brought his car over (for the winter) this morning. I have to take them to the airport early on Sunday – so I probably won’t ‘check-in’ until late on Sunday!

I’m really feeling bad for the folks in the parth of Matthew. I remember Andrew (back in 1992) when I spent a couple of weeks sleeping in my car so I could help out at the Salvation Army camp in Homestead, FL. It was an amazing experience.

There was one nail left in the shoe and the shoe was well worn. Judging by the rusty condition, it could have been there for years. As for interesting finds, this gold chalice is on top of a rock outcrop, about 100 feet high. Very difficult to get to it and I know it has been there for over a year. Miles away from “civilisation”, and undisturbed. I don’t know who put it there, but so far it hasn’t been removed.

    Mornin’, Glories!

D’Girl had an early meeting this morning, so she dropped her girl off early & I got her on out the door. Watching her trot off down the street’s one of the best views of my world…also means I can go lay down for a bit, ’cause she wears me out!

Bureau of Land Management fence and gate, keeping nature in and others out. Actually keeping free range cattle from invading the “settled” areas. The second pic is a close-up of the top of the post on the left side. Apparently someone didn’t approve of the fence being there! Mornin’, Glories!

Had G’Girl overnight, & just got her up & fed & out the door…whew! Wouldn’t do that again full time for love nor money…well, maybe for love! Now I have to finish simmering the vegetable soup so I can take a crock pot full up to D’Girl at school. Some of the teachers take lunch pot luck turns & today was hers. She was gonna take it last night, but it wasn’t quite ready, so I told her I’d drop it off at the office today…& tell them that my daughter forgot her lunch!

  • Wildkitty

Good morning all! I’m hoping to get my LP fireplace fixed today. I was originally told that the part which ‘went bad’ was no longer available – and I thought I was going to have to buy an entire new fireplace stove. However, a nice gentleman (from a different heating company) pointed me to an ‘after market’ part and yesterday I took a picture and ‘after market information’ into my service company.

I got a call later in the afternoon telling me that they actually had that item (which will only need another ‘minor part’ attached) on their stock shelf – and their stock man hadn’t recognized the part. Soooo – about three weeks after I was told it couldn’t be fixed I’m expecting the service man in about 10 minutes to attempt a fix.

I’m keeping ‘everything’ crossed – and expect to have heat in my living room by this evening.

    • BuckeyeB

Sooooo glad…I’ve been keeping my eye on your weather & worrying about you. All crossed here…& waiting for disqust to bother showing my g’morning post!

      • Wildkitty

Hey! I finally got all the flower ‘tubs’ off my ‘dooryard’ and my garage cleaned out (the second bay) for my neighbor to bring in his 1956 Lincoln (which he stores here while they are snowbirds for the winter). I makes me getting around jsut a wee bit ‘tight’ but these neighbors are so good to me. He even keeps my field mowed (which I don’t think I’ve even stepped on this year) and won’t take money. Mind you – with all their kids around – they ask me to take them to the airport in Bangor – and pick them up in May. That way there can be no family squabbles!

AND my LP fireplace works. It took the mechanic only about an hour to install the part (which I think I mentioned they actually had on the shelf – but hadn’t recognized) – and he took a jar of home made ‘Jersey Black Butter’ which I made last week. It’s a traditional apple butter – with special seasonings – that I try to make every year. I have yet to find someone who doesn’t like it!

You had G-girl overnight! I have to go stay over with my BFF tonight and stay for about 24 hours. She is undergoing a ‘needle lung biopsy’ today and is told she needs to have someone with her for at least 24 hours. So, I’ll come down the hill late this evening and again early in the morning to take care of my kitties – and we will have some ‘girlie’ time together.

        • BuckeyeB

Glad you’re back to the heated world…& glad you’re serviced by such upright people!
Tell BFF I said hi & send good wishes.

          • Wildkitty

            Hi, BB

YEP – And it’s nice to be back home – with my kitties.

But I had a bad night after all the ‘lifting and hauling of plant post’ yesterday and hadn’t taken my potassium. So I suffered with leg and foot cramps. First thing I did when I got home is take the potassium and now some chicken soup before I settle down on the sofa – and do NOTHING!

    • missj

      Hey Mary….
so glad they had the after market part….
you have to be REALLY careful what folks tell you …
we have a 84 Cavalier wagon and someone told us that a part wasn’t available several years ago…. I told him to KEEP LOOKING – that I wasn’t going to lose this car with under 75K for a stoopid damn part – and there HAD to be a substitute…. AMAZING – they found it!
You have to really ask sometimes…. the furnace guy said that a part was no longer available… and what he SHOULD have said was: we no longer service that brand and no longer carry the parts…
GLAD Boris called to mfr to verify – and got the part …. kept the furnace going for several additional years….
      EVERYONE OS A CROOK!

      • Wildkitty

        Howdy mj!

This company has been very good to me over the years and I got a call from them this afternoon saying ‘No charge for the part OR the service charge – because that part could have sat on their shelf – just taking up space – if I hadn’t identified it as ‘after market’ for them.’ Of course, there’s always the chance that they hoped to sell a new stove – but I don’t think so.!

I’m just back at the house to feed cats for the night. I’m spending the night at BFF’s because she underwent a biopsy and needs somebody with her for the first 24 hours. So, we will watch the debate together – and drink coffee.

Be back home tomorrow – mid morning I think!

As it’s 3 am in the west, it must be dawn in the east. Here’s a pic of a young bull on the open range. We met as I was hiking yesterday. I usually hike the cattle trails instead of the man-made ones. They lead to more interesting places. He’s a spring calf, just getting his weight and horns. We passed each other with respect….never know if the mama is still around!

    • BuckeyeB

Out standing in his field…both of you!

      • Nowhere Man

Just me and a bull calf for 20 miles around. I’d record the sound, but there isn’t any. Complete silence, with the occasional skittering across the sand a skink makes.

Morning Man! Another picture (and story to go with it) o bring back memories. NICE!

I will never forget the time I tried to ‘stare down a brahma bull’ in what I call ‘Zane Grey Country’. However. he was behind a fence and I was on the edge of the road. He was yuuuuuuuge – but marvelous. And, of course he won the battle of the ‘stare’!

      Howdy, howdy!

Just had supper and couldn’t remember if I had checked in today. Been busy having fights on a couple of other sites – to kill time. It’s been cold and rainy and just – not the most pleasant day. But I did get a call from my nephew and his wife who are finally getting things back together after they returned home a couple of days ago. They said that I should expect a call from my sister (his mother) – just to catch up! But I guess it’s too late for that this evening. She goes to bed about 9pm and it’s already 1am there now!

Hope your day was good – and that tomorrow will be better.

Morning all! Just on 40F and grey this morning. I don’t know if I slept wrong and put pressure on the sciatic nerve, but I hurt this morning. When I got out of bed I was almost bent double until I managed to get downstairs and ‘walk it out’! If it doesn’t disappear by itself I might go upstairs later and sit in a jaccuzzi tub and get some water therapy.

I’m happy with my ‘Jersey Black Butter’ which took about three days of preparation and cooking (in a ‘slow’ crock-pot! I got ten 8 ounce jars, and eight 4 ounce jars all canned and ready to be labelled and stored. However, I kept an 8 ounce jar on the counter top – just for me to use on my toast.

Now, I’m going to peel lots of garlic (that my neighbor gave me) to make some ‘garlic pate’ and maybe some ‘garlic jelly’. ALL my neighbors are willing takers of the finished product!

Today – later – I want to get the eight big flower pots off my driveway – empty them and store them for next year. I might be able to salvage a couple of plants (in smaller pots) – but this has not been a good year for any of them. The overnight frost from a couple of nights ago has wilted all my nasturtiums, so I’ll search for the seeds (I love to eat them) and eliminate them from the garden!

So, MY Saturday is planned – how about all of you?

    • Red Balloon

It’s 20 degrees warmer here with light rain. The University has it’s homecoming game today against Northwestern. It’s tied right now at 24. I just got back from some errands. Game time is the best time to run errands, but it was still pretty busy at Costco. I’m just glad to be home and plan to work on getting some stuff ready for sale on eBay. With some luck I’m going to start selling a lot of my junk next weekend.

      • Wildkitty

I didn’t know you do E-Bay. I know mssj does and I’ve considered it because my little gift shop is still crowded with stuff. But I guess I’m chicken just trying to set it up. I might call an auctioneer to take if off my hands.
I agree that ‘game time’ is good for errands – but maybe not for the same reason you do. I have absolutely zero interest in sports – I don’t understand any of the American sports – although when I was a kid at school we did play what we called ‘netball’ in the schoolyard, which is different, but close to basketball.
Wish we had a Costco somewhere near. The best I can do is Sam’s in Bangor – about 50 miles from here. The nearest Costco is about hours away.
        Have a great weekend

    Good morning all!
Got some garden cleanups done yesterday and had to end up clambering down a hillside (into the bamboo which holds the hillside together) to retrieve my hand clippers which I’d forgotten to take out of the wheelbarrow before I dumped everything into the bamboo (I usually tip my garden trash there in an effort to ‘stifle new growth’). Anyway, I proved to myself that I’m still agile – AND I retrieved my clippers.

    • Wildkitty

Missed you yesterday, Man – but any time I catch up with you – I’m never disappointed with your photos. Stunning!
      How as daughter’s visit?

      • Nowhere Man

Good morning. I check in here every day and if the comments are a year or more old, check out again. I’m three hours away from the East coast, so I have a built in time delay anyway. Daughter is back in phoney Phoenix, with the concrete canyon heat. She’s planning to move to Flagstaff in the Spring, which will bring her an hour closer to me and a world of difference in weather. We had a marvelous time here, as we always do. She had a chance to practice her culinary skills on a willing tester. She is vegetarian and I certainly enjoyed the meals she concocted. Never missed the red meat at all! Here’s a photograph out my back door this morning. Fall weather always brings spectacular sunrises and sunsets. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ba9a25c18cc3dff88ca21fb227d1963fab983c139bf0bd1c60a4983ce7928be6.jpg

        • Wildkitty

          NICE!

I can’t say that I’m a true ‘vegetarian’ but the older I get the less meat appeals to me. Love my fruit smoothies, veggie plates, soups (sometimes with meat pieces – and other times simply with broth) and lots of pastas, potatoes (my staple diet as a child) and couscous dishes.

Glad you had a good visit.

  • Wildkitty

Aaaahhhh, it opens right up to this morning’s comments. Thanks Discus!

Hi everyone. 54F outside and not a breath of wind – so I’m hoping to get outside to do some cleanups.
Yesterday I worked peeling (almost) a half bushel of ‘fallen’ apples to make something that is a ‘Jersey’ staple in the winter. It’s called ”Black Butter’ and it’s a type of apple butter – with a splash of ‘secret ingredients’ – described thusly:-
“A great tradition that exists as a result of Jersey’s proliferation of apples is the production of ‘black butter’ or ‘Le Niere Buerre’. Made from cider apples, the new cider is boiled over a fire for many hours – up to two days! When the cider is ‘reduced’ by half, apples, sugar, lemon, liquorice and spices are added.” I have two ‘crockpots’ cooking and they will be ‘working’ for another 24 hours – at least!
Of course the ‘traditional’ way of cooking this is to begin with a huge vat over an open fire and 700 pounds of apples as a starter! I cut the quantities down by quite a bit!

  • BuckeyeB

Oh, yay…disqust’s decided to sit on comments for an hour or two or forever again. I’ve heard disqust not only sucks, it sniffs. Just saying…!

never had to answer to anyone – and never got past the 6th grade bully stage ….

          • BuckeyeB

Yes he is, & no he didn’t…seemed to be more to it last night though. He struck me as being on a speed high at first, followed by a crash towards the end as it wore off…the sniffles & the cotton mouth. I’m sure they’ll spin it as allergies & anti-histamines…not that his base would care if he shot up heroin on 5th Avenue, after shooting that poor passer-by!
Maybe he’ll decide that he’s allergic to Hillary & be forced to skip the rest of the debates…

      • Wildkitty

Morning! How is Boris this morning?

        • missj

knows who he is and where he is!
          that’s a win / win here!

          • BuckeyeB

Does he still know who’s boss…that’s the important part!

            • missj

              Yeah …. ;-)

          • Wildkitty

Glad to hear it. Be patient – he will be fine

    • Wildkitty

      ‘Morning BB
‘Li’l Donnie’ reminds me of the ‘little corporal’ who demanded adoration from the populace – only to prove himself to be a monster.

      • BuckeyeB

Mornin’, Mary…he reminds me of all things evil.

Did they get your heaters straightened out?

        • Wildkitty

No, but I did get a call saying that the part IS available for $432 online. But when I pull up the website I don’t know what I’m looking at – so I have more research to do before I have to spend a couple of ‘grand’!

          • BuckeyeB

Oh, no! Looking to repair or replace? I know the overnights are getting nippy here & I’m debating whether to bite the bullet & replace my old furnace before it’s mid-blizzard & I’m regretting not having done so earlier.

  • BuckeyeB

    Mornin’, Glories!

It is still morning, right? It was one of those up/down nights, & the last ‘down’lasted ’til just a bit ago. I’m gonna be ‘off’ all day. Oh, well…Happy Monday!

  • missj

    Happy First Debate Day…..
    we will NOT be watching……
although I WILL be enjoying a few Screwdrivers! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b4e8b9ae2b48d4dfdd9357580820ecca7cfd5778c25009872eedba8f4b66a5bb.jpg

    • BuckeyeB

      Hey, mj…Words of Pooh wisdom!
This may be one I watch…just so I don’t have to take everyone else’s word for what a fiasco it was. I’m with Pooh…I want this thing done & Li’l Donnie Drumpf sent on his way.

    • Nowhere Man

This is the longest election “season” I have ever experienced! I am told it will be soon over, but the hurting and healing will take a much longer time.

      • BuckeyeB

I just hope the dregs of Li’l Donnie’s base fades away as completely as the Tea Partiers seem to have…problem is, they aren’t armed with tea bags.

A scan of the festivities over the weekend, from a parade to bull riding, to car show. There were also 50+ vendor booths, a farmer’s market, water slide for the kids, rock climbing, live music and a beer garden. The local museum also had a display and talk about the “Harvey Girls” hotels that were here. The Beale Hotel and the Brunswick Hotel are still here. No Harvey Girls though. This was all in the main part of olde townne Kingman, with three streets blocked off and plenty of people attending. No fuss, no bother, no drunks arrested nor any fights. In the photographs there are two of people pulling a Ford tractor. This was the Kingman version of a tractor pull! It ws a set distance and the result was timed. The guys in the green shirts were the winners and the cops were third. The cops came off their beat, wearing full equipment, and did their best; only losing by a few seconds! Don’t mess with Kingman cops!

      ‘Morning Man!
REALLY wish I was there to see the fun!
Was it just for one day – or will it go on for a while?

      • BuckeyeB

Hey, WildOne…how’s life at your house this morning? Did the gas service guy get you warmed up?
Your friend ‘Bob’ certainly got me warmed up yesterday…his nasty comments are the ones I deleted…along with him…yesterday. Apparently he thought he could jump over here & continue one of his rants against you. I thought differently!
Thanks…made my day, keeping our little world safe & sane & troll free. Did break one of my major rules though…
Never mud wrestle a pig. You get dirty & the pig enjoys it.
I should have just told him to STFU & pulled the plug, but I had to mount my soapbox first. Sometimes you just gotta!

      • Nowhere Man

It started on Thursday evening with a chili cook out, and ended on Sunday afternoon with a concert in the park. If only the government could run as efficiently as this festival organisers did…….!

Good evening peoples. The “Best of the West” festival is over and my daughter and I are in need of a good night’s rest. Fun and games for three days. Morning Dahlings!
back from our Adventure in Maryland ….
and it was more of an adventure than we bargained for….
Boris had an episode of transient global amnesia….
(is that not a mouthful!) …. he woke up the second day not remembering the night before and asking repeatedly what had happened …. seems the part of his brain that makes memories was turned off….
called the kiddie doc who is a neighbor and he confirmed that a trip to the hospital was in order…. they kept him overnight for observation
the neurologist said it always passes off in 24 – 48 hours …. don’t know the cause – and there are no lasting effects…
another excursion into strange medical happenings … at least this one was benign….
I need to decompose for a few days… and then get the eye thingie done on Tuesday …. they don’t even require you to have someone else drive you home…. but Boris is going to anyhow…..
gonna watch some football today …. Beagles v Stillers https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/7c45b8d80f1a34cd37af6957b07a20b7370f752377ef7e826e8eba0498530213.jpg

    • BuckeyeB

      Hey…our long lost lamb!
That had to be scary…has it worn off now? Just glad you were with friends & not like in the middle of nowhere on a road trip. I understand more & more every day what they say about old age…’tain’t for sissies, is it?! I have a colonoscopy coming up in a few weeks that I am absolutely not looking forward to. Should have had it a week ago, but in my usual approach to anything medical…wear your blinders & don’t think about it…I didn’t read the 10 pages of instructions & info they gave me, thinking that all I had to do was drink a gallon of crap to wash down the laxatives. So I didn’t not eat all the stuff that I had to avoid for the week before the procedure & had to reschedule. So for now the blinders are firmly back in place…
Speaking of ‘medical’, please decompress instead of decomposing…much better for your health!

      • missj

YES! …. we stayed an extra day so I could rest up from the excitement and make sure he was back to normal!
NEVER heard about this before! …. it was like he was a broken record – we would tell him what we had for dinner the night before and what we did…. he would ask again….
all the way t the hospital – he kept asking why we were going and how I made the determination …. and WHY did I have Chris’ phone number in my phone!
his recollection from the night before did come back – but as the neurologist said… during the attack …. from about 9AM – 3PM is GONE! …. the attending in the ER had played football for Duke – I recognized him IMMEDIATELY!
he went right to the head of the class… because of course this pretty much presents as a stroke with the confusion – but he didn’t have any other symptoms…. it was pretty much my explanation of what was going on that tipped them off to the diagnosis …

        • BuckeyeB

I never heard of it either. Maybe I just forget that I forget…living alone, there’s no one to correct me but Lucy, & she knows which side her kibble’s buttered on. Maybe that’s why she’s gotten so fat…she keeps telling me that I haven’t fed her yet!
Reminds me of a friend when I was in high school…
her G’Ma lived with them & several times a year, the friend/her sister would bounce into grandma’s room, all sweetness & light, & announce that it was their birthday. G’Ma…who was fairly confused at this point…would pull out her purse & say ‘Oh, sweetie, I’m soooo sorry, but I forgot. Here…get yourself something nice.’ Karma does have a wicked sense of humor though…the friend’s daughter has ripped her off for years.

          • missj

that’s why you have to keep all that stuff written down!

            • BuckeyeB

& stay away from evil grandchildren, & save the nice somethings for yourself!

              • missj

I believe we will be avoiding the grandchildren syndrome altogether – which is FINE BY ME!

                • BuckeyeB

As I’ve always told D’Girl, one is a nice round number…this way we have her outnumbered!

      • missj

as for the colonoscopy – I REFUSE – POINT BLANK!
gave the physician my long version back in June when she became insistent….
I don’t care to have a medical misadventure due to the diverticulitis …. and a poke through can easily happen …
AND…. everyone – and I mean EVERYONE I know who has had colon cancer has had profuse bleeding …. in my father’s case – he was improperly diagnosed … for 18 months and nearly died… but they put him back together and he lived another 40 years ….
and the others IGNORED the symptoms …. until it was too late…
the blood in the stool test works JUST FINE ….
as log as you are on top of it…. until they come up with a less invasive test – I’ll take my chances!

        • BuckeyeB

Thanks for the re-enforcement…that’s been my position for the last ten years, then I had a minor bleeding incident & panicked. From what I’ve gathered from my new doctor, who really wants to cover all the bases & tick off all the boxes, & the gastro megaplex she referred me to, there could be several benign explanations for the one time episode. They just really want to use it to get me to get a baseline scope that their policies & procedures recommend I should have had 10 years ago. I’m wavering so hard at this point, my blinders are clattering, but I have a real strong hunch that I’ll end up calling the whole thing off. i just hate tempting the malpractice gods!

          • missj

Drmissj says that a one time incident is no big deal!
but if you have a tumor it will grow – and bleed more over time… and increasingly frequent….
when one of my dance Mom’s told me how she ignored the symptoms for over a year – and they were PROFUSE – I was not surprised at the outcome….
you just can’t ignore the obvious over time ….

you should make her do the occult test in the office…
            and again in 6 months…. that’s ENOUGH! ….
she is just covering her azzzz for malpractice ….
I told ‘missy’ she was OFF THE HOOK …. she smiled and said she wasn’t looking for that – but I KNOW she was!

            • BuckeyeB

              LOL!

Their consensus seemed to be that it was probably a viral thing & had worked itself out, but since they had all these tests & equipment they could use, why not. My gut feeling…all puns intended… is they’re half right, half wrong. As my old doctor (rest her soul) once told me, cancer doesn’t come & go…cancer comes & stays.

I’ll tell her I got a second opinion & it confirmed my instincts!

              • missj

just remember – I got my MD from the same place my Mother-In-Law did…
                the Sears Roebuck Catalog!

                • BuckeyeB

Same place my G’Ma used to get her toilet paper!

    • Red Balloon

Is “decompose” just another Pittsburghian phrase? Also, is the eye thingy cataract surgery or lasik?

      • missj

it’s pretty much a Steinman phrase ….. lol
had the cataracts done 20 years ago…. and as he predicted – they came back….
right eye is pretty fuzzy – I flunked to test…. so they are going to lazer a hole in the remaining lens they left behind…..
I thought the protein had attacked itself to the glass lens – but I was WRONG! …. lol
they leave some of the original lens in place – so you don’t get those ‘fishy eyes’ like my grandmother had….
he told me it takes less time to do than it took him to write up the notes from the original surgery….

        • BuckeyeB

Now see, that’s why the blinders. That whole explanation just gave me chills & goosebumps!

          • missj

yeah – I am firmly of the opinion that the words eyeball and surgery don’t even belong in the same dictionary! …. but this is not invasive – like the lens implants …
BFF had lazer procedure right after her cataract surgery because she was having light flashes…
she wouldn’t listen when I told her that they would go away in time … (the surgeon told her that, too!)
but she wasn’t patient – she didn’t give her brain the time to reprogram the images….
she drove herself – didn’t even tell me she was getting it done….
I realized when we were in the burgh that I was getting pretty bad …. as long as I was in my familiar surroundings I compensated just fine …. but in some place new – I was challenged

            • BuckeyeB

The thought of anyone or anything touching my eye but me makes me shudder…& I used to wear contacts (the old hard ones). I’d peel them off, spit on ’em & stick ’em back in…even slept in them half the time. But then I discovered pot…& that I couldn’t smoke & wear contacts at the same time…& decided I could see well enough without them!
Actually, my vision seems to have gotten better the last few years…now it’s just waiting for the adjustment between close up & distance focus, so I have Dollar Store reading glasses stashed throughout the house. I used to scold my mother because she pretty much quit wearing her glasses for the last 5-6 years, & she told me the same thing…just didn’t need them anymore.

              • missj

Oh those ‘special drops’ work in a FLASH!
I remember when they used to tap dance on your eyeball for the Glaucoma test…. never felt a thing….
now they just shoot a puff of air at ya…..
there have been so many changes in the past 20 years!

                • BuckeyeB

No shit…thought my old eye guy was gonna stroke out years ago when I told him I wasn’t worried about glaucoma, what with all the pre-emptive pot I smoked!
It’s not anyone touching my eye that bothers me…it’s the THOUGHT of anyone touching my eye! I’m such a wuss about some things.

                  • missj

                    HA!

        • Red Balloon

I wouldn’t be able to hold still for something like that being done to my eye. It makes me shudder just to think about it.

          • missj

I thought the same thing – till I was damn near blind….
they used to knock you out for the cataract surgery – but I woke up BOTH times …. but you are so damn groggy – you don’t put it together …. I saw the new lens being slid into place …. and the other time I woke up as he was stitching my eye back up…. HA!

            • Red Balloon

              Ugh!

      • missj

what did you post that got you in trouble with Blue????

        • BuckeyeB

          C’mon, RB…inquiring minds, you know!

          • missj

whatever it was – he took it down in RECORD TIME!

            • BuckeyeB

              LOL!

              • Wildkitty

HA! You caught up with me – so you already know that my ‘puter problem was finally resolved – and now it’s time for supper and a ‘snuggle under my bankie’. The heating service man is supposed to be here at 7.30 in the morning. I hope he can get things working for me.

        • Red Balloon

I’m not in trouble. She has a Yahoo email account and she was jokingly accusing me of trying to get her to switch to another provider. I figured it was best not to leave that out on my FB page just in case someone thought we were airing our out laundry in public. I post very rarely and I’d just rather keep my favorite family posts on top anyway. I have deleted a lot of my posts over the years and quite FB twice. Now with Lib Friends, I’ve got a reason to check it now and then. Much lower stress in a group fun thing anyway.

    • Wildkitty

      Hi mj – Hope
Boris is OK. Something similar happened to me in back in 1995. I was on the kike in Colorado and got caught in a snowstorm. When I finally got off I was shaking, but that didn’t stop me from riding the next day – to Moab, Utah. It was the following morning that I couldn’t remember were I was – or why, I lost the sight in my right eye for a few hours and began suffering with vertigo.
When my mind finally returned I decided that I had no business on a bike and headed off to Lubbock, TX (800 miles away) where I was friendly with the ‘dealer’ – who sold the bike out from under me, put me up for a couple of days until I found a car to take me back to the east coast.
It was scary – but, thankfully, temporary. Boris will be OK, but have him checked out. I never did go to a doctor – but an EMT I met along the road said it appeared I’d suffered a mild ‘brain attack – brought on by stress. I’ve been OK since.

      • missj

well – you are the FIRST person that even knows what is was!
I did read that it usually comes with headaches…. but he didn’t have one…
he did go to the head of the class in the emergency room….
and got a Cat scan and MRI – both of which came back clear …. neurologist said he sees about four cases a month …
I do think it was brought on by stress…. going to see Lois was quite traumatic…. we hadn’t seen her since her husband passed – and they were like his second family (only better) when he first moved out here …
it brought up a lot of memories…. and I think it was just too much for him… so he blocked it out

        • Wildkitty

          Good morning mj!
Apparently is isn’t an ‘unusual’ happenstance for someone under stress. Unfortunately I was alone in a far away place and it DID scare me and I stayed in my room trying to figure my next move. But, the eyesight came back fairly quickly and, by halfway thru the morning, the memory had also returned.
The ONLY thing that stayed with me was ‘a touch of vertigo’ – but not bad. However, each morning, when I come downstairs I find myself holding BOTH handrails. I have a stone retaining wall in the back of the house and I find that the vertigo will appear if I try to work ‘facing’ the drop off – BUT, if I turn my back to the ‘drop off’ I can back up and stand RIGHT ON TOP OF THE WALL with no effects.
Good luck to both of you. Keep me posted.

    • Nowhere Man

      “Decomposing”.
People were surprised to hear music coming from Beethoven’s grave in Zentralfriedhof, Vienna. A music conductor was brought in to listen and he discovered it was Beethoven’s 5th symphony, but it sounded strange. It was heard backwards. The conductor realised the reason after some thought, it was Beethoven decomposing!

      • missj

        HA!

  • BuckeyeB

    C’mon, disqust…spit it out!

    • Wildkitty

      HA! Good morning!
You might be having trouble with ‘discust’ – but again, if I’m MIA – don’t worry. Yesterday, my internet reception began giving me trouble, and when I called my service they said that it was ‘internal trouble’ (I couldn’t get them to tell me what) that might take a couple of days to correct and they would call me by phone when it is repaired. I live in a valley and can’t even get a simple cell-phone reception – and so, the ONLY internet reception I get is DSL – thru my telephone company.
When I came downstairs about an hour ago I clicked on here to say ‘HI’ and it took almost an hour to load this page – soooooooo, I guess I’ll have to find something else to do today.
As for staying warm in this cold snap? Don’t you know that everything happens at once? The service man came to clean my heating units last week and found a problem with both – and neither are working properly (a fake gas stove in the living room – looks like an old fireplace) – with a blower; and the gas Renai heater in the kitchen. Until now – both have heated the entire house – but NEITHER are working today – and it was only 56F in the house when I got up – and 39F outside. I guess I’m going to have to snuggle under a ‘blankie’ and binge watch the ‘talking heads’ – until I nap! It’s a good thing I’m a tough old bird – and also that I live alone and don’t have to worry about anyone else!
I’ll be back when I can!

      • BuckeyeB

        Hey, WildOne!
Sounds like a great idea for a Sunday morning…’cept for the 56 part. Can you go up to BFF’s…for the coffee & the heat?
I promise not to call checking on you…for a bit! But first thing Monday morning, start bugging the gas company. Play that ‘old lady’ card for all it’s worth! I doubt that you could pull off frail, but toss a few ‘health concerns’ in… just a little icing on the cake.

      • missj

        Hi Mary!
you are correct – when it rains… it POURS!
        KEEP WARM!
was in the high 80’s here the other day…. and I know it can turn on a dime
we will all be walking around with colds in the next few weeks!

      • missj

        just checked – it’s currently 53 outside here ….
of course I had to bring in all the orchids yesterday ….
and now it will be the in and out game for the next few weeks

    Good morning all! Aaaaahhhhmm Baaaaach!
40F outside and 60F in my house. I’m glad my company left yesterday because my ‘heating units’ have decided not to work this morning. So I guess my little electric heater is going to be sat in front of me while I play with my beads.
The gas company doesn’t have service workers over the weekend so I will have to wait until Monday morning.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed having my nephew and his wife visit. He is already 60 and – for the first time – I really got to spend time with him and ‘get to know him’! Going home to visit family every three years and getting to see each of my sister’s family for maybe an hour-and-a-half – or go out for a meal with the family, really hasn’t allowed me to ‘know’ any of them.
Now they have gone to Toronto to visit one of her relatives and will head back to New York by Tuesday night to get a plane back across the Atlantic. They have a lot of driving to do but they have a GPS in their rental car which, to me, spoils the excitement of road travel. However, since they have time limits, it’s good that they won’t get lost.
    Have a great weekend everyone.

    • Red Balloon

You stay warm and have a nice weekend too, WK! It’s nice you got to know your nephew better.

      • Wildkitty

I’ve been away from family for more than 64 years and with only occasional visits it’s hard to keep track. But, no matter what – family is family!

        • BuckeyeB

          Usually! I do have a toxic ex-sister…

    • BuckeyeB

      Welcome back!

I’m so glad you got to spend that time with family & got to know your nephew. That is what it’s all about…not the hokey pokey!

Looks like from my weather thingie that your temp this morning’s barely 40. Wrap up & stay warm, Mary!

    Mornin’, Glories!

Off to the almost last of the Farmer’s Markets, after breakfast with Mother’s Friend’s Family. I’d acronym that, but MFF just doesn’t sound right! Maybe I should change it to Posthumous Step-Family.

    • Wildkitty

Morning! My nephew and I were discussing ALL my ‘adopted families’ which I have made in my travels clean across this country. I think it eased my nephew’s mind to know how friendly everyone in town is with each other. I told him that while we all (less than 500 folks in town) can disagree over politics and religion – when someone needs help we are all ‘family’ and everyone helps everyone else.

Hello everyone. The weather gods have smiled on this lowly place and released some rain. Not a deluge, but a soft “scotch mist” of a rain falling steadily for the past few hours. Daughter and her dog here and enjoying the coolness, after living in Phoenix the past four years. Took Spirit, the dog, to the dog park and he was in heaven. Dogs to play with and temps below 75, on wet grass, not hot asphalt. One strange dog was there, a cross between a domestic dog and a coyote. Friendly, with a coyote looking face. They call them “reservation dogs”. Andy Devine Days festivities beginning tomorrow, so a fun filled weekend is here.

      Howdy, Howdy, BB
When I needed to file taxes – when my shop was still open – I used to take my paperwork to a tax preparer in Bangor. On my first visit I noticed a YUUUUGE Marlin (how could I miss it) mounted on his office wall. When I questioned him about it he pointed me to two display cases against the wall behind me.
I was curious about all the ‘western’ paraphernalia the contained, and he told me that he was a Roy Rogers fan and that he had been to the auction when the Roy Rogers museum closed. Rogers had been an avid fisherman and the Marlin was one that Rogers had caught – and the display cases were filled with lots of shirts. ropes, boots and spurs, a saddle and a couple of gun holsters.
Of course, we had a great conversation about the old ‘horses ass’ movies when you always knew who was the good guy (with the white hat) and the bad guy (black hat) who would always lose his hat in the fist fights while the good guy never lost his!
Have a great day, my friend.

      • Nowhere Man

As kids, we went to the Saturday morning movies and always there was a cowboy one. Usually a Roy Rogers, but sometimes a Johnny Mac Brown, or a Hopalong Cassidy, or a Gene Autry, or a Tom Mix, etc. John Wayne we didn’t like, as he wasn’t a “cowboy” in our young eyes. All the cowboys seemed to be from no certain country, but Wayne was definitely pro American and that was a defect to our Canadian eyes. Anyway, here’s a story about Roy Rogers.

Roy and the bunkhouse boys were out riding the range one day and a mountain lion attacked them. The lion aimed for Roy, but only clawed his new cowboy boots. The cat got away and the group returned to the ranch. He told Dale of the incident and then gathered a bunch of the boys and set out to catch the lion. Later, the group returned and there was Roy in the lead with the dead lion draped over the saddle. Dale rushed out and said, “Pardon me Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?”

        • Wildkitty

Neat story! I watched it happen – in my mind – as I read your words.
Back then, the ‘range’ was so very different!
I never really liked John Wayne either. I think it had to do with his ‘drawl’!

          • Nowhere Man

I had the pleasure of attending a concert by Roy’s back-up band, the Sons of the Pioneers, at a steak cafe in Tucson, way back in the early 80s. They sounded the same as I remembered from the radio broadcasts many years before. The original “singing cowboy” was Gene Autry, before Roy did his. As young kids, we didn’t like the hero starting to sing and worse still…. to a “girl”!

            • Wildkitty

              Ah, God Evening, my friend.

I would have liked to see that. Funny how the mind works. I could almost see the story that you told and, as I write this, I can hear them. They had a much more gentle sound than today’s Country songs.

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UiSMyyj-Ac

              Enjoy!

      • BuckeyeB

I remember the last of the Sat. cowboy matinees. They were at the seedy old vaudeville theaters…the better places where they showed the current movies didn’t mess with them. Then they had a second run on early Sat. morning tv…

    Morning Dahlings!
just stopping by for a quickie…. been busy beyond belief… just don’t know where the time goes…
in residence at the boarding school for a long weekend while T2 and ‘you know who’ go to a wedding in MN…. I am sitting on the couch that is between the two windows on the left (ground floor) …
then we are off to MD to visit a friend – actually the person for who Black Bart was named….
food is GREAT here! …. and I sent plenty home with Boris and Bart yesterday…. (although dinner did a major suck last night – but i made do)
looks like showers later today – we really need it….
also been busy getting all the plants ready to come indoors for the winter…
after we get back from MD – have to get the cataracts that came back … AUGH! …. zapped off – and then it is up to Easton for Lafayette homecoming and cat sitting for T1 and hubby as they go to Vegas to visit friends…

    • BuckeyeB

      Hey, mj!
It’s the Fall Kerfuffle & the change of weather all together with the Harvest Moon…makes life crazy!

      • missj

yeah – the natives were quite restless last night….
but they must have had a 11PM curfew….
this house is full of Third formers (9th graders) so they are all scared to death… lol … and T2 told them I am RUTHLESS ….
so they have been keeping a low profile…. one did ask about lights out… and I told them I didn’t care about that – just keep it QUIET!
they are SOOOOO much quieter than the girls were last year!

        • BuckeyeB

Poor babies…didn’t use ‘The Look’ on them, did you?!

          • missj

not at all …. I figure most of them are homesick to death…. met one of them in the dining hall at breakfast yesterday … he was so pleasant … he helped me clean up the ‘common room’ last night….
will have to make them some cupcakes the next time I come up…. wouldn’t attempt to make ANYTHING in this kitchen!
had several come up to me in the dining hall asking where they were supposed to check in – as I was pretty much the only adult there…. I told them they were off the hook! and then Lou later told me they no longer have to check in on the weekends….

    • Wildkitty

Hey, seems like there aren’t enough hours in a day for you. Don’t overdo – but have a good time.

Send some of that rain here! Drier here than a popcorn fart! Where I grew up in Canada, a slight rain/mist was called a “Scotch mist”. Being that the Scots were frugal.

Well, WildOne, I can see you out there in the ether, but then you’re gone…poof! Disqust delays this morning…
As for me, I’ve got Fall Fever…outside calls, & I must go!

  • Wildkitty

    Good Morning All!
I can’t believe that it’s only 35F this morning. I called the oil/gas company last week to have all my heating appliances cleaned before it got cold – and the guy is due between 8 and 10 this morning. I turn the pilot light off on my living room fireplace every summer and I can’t light it this morning – so I’m glad I have an spare electric heater to turn towards me as I sit here – because the thermometer in the house says only 58F.
The trees are beginning to turn and, when I opened my eyes this morning, I watched last night’s full moon – which wore a halo – until it fell behind the pine tree outside my window.
And summer doesn’t end for a few days yet!!
    Hope everyone is well.

    • BuckeyeB

Well, shit…we must be on a 24 hour delay, ’cause Nick just pushed this up to the top of his thread!
Hope you’re toasty warm this morning & all’s well as can be with you & yours, as my G’Ma used to say.

      • Wildkitty

Morning! And YOU just popped right to the top of the page!
Actually NO! There apparently is something wrong with my main propane heater (A Vermont Castings gas fireplace) and the service man is going to have to see is he can get a part for it – because even he can’t get it to fire up. It will be Monday at the earliest before they will let me know if the part is still available. If not? Well, I guess it’s a ‘throw away’ world – and I will have to replace it.!

  • BuckeyeB

There goes disqust…slurpin’ canal water again!

    • Wildkitty

Howdy Friend. I don’t remember if I checked in this morning and, since I’m here – met with 1 year old comments – I’ll just let everyone know that I’m trying to clean house before my company comes – and just playing on this ‘puter while taking coffee breaks.
Now it’s time for supper and then I have friends coming down to get me to make some copies of medical papers – ’cause I have a printer!

    Mornin’, Glories!

Since disqust is determined to be a dick, I’m just gonna answer what ever recent comments I can find while I listen to ‘Fall’ music…the I’m gonna take Lucy to the vet’s so she stops dragging her butt around the floor. Happy Not Monday!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XePzW03p0WE

    • Wildkitty

      ‘Morning BB
I’m trying to pick up the courage to call the vet about Rusty. It seems that the lumps that the vet removed from his right front leg are growing again and I don’t know how long it will be before he is thoroughly miserable. I don’t want to have the vet take the leg because Rusty has stones, steps, plants to navigate outside, cat flaps to get outside and stairs and furniture to navigate indoors. So, I’m pampering/spoiling him and will see if I can keep him until after my company comes next week.
By the way, I will probably be MIA for a few days next week. My nephew and his wife are coming to NYC for a few days – then will drive up to see me before travelling to Toronto for a few days before returning to Jersey. I haven’t had to entertain anyone for about 10 years, so I hope I don’t disappoint them. Of course, I WILL take them for a Maine lobster dinner but, since they will have a car, I’m assuming they will go on day sightseeing trips. I’ll play it by ear. But If I’m MIA – please be alarmed..

      • Nowhere Man

My daughter is visiting me all next week and Kingman is having the annual “Andy Devine Days” parade, rodeo, fair, etc. Small towns have the best events, as most of the participants are known locals. I miss the Nova Scotia lobster I grew up eating. Also the fresh fish. But I don’t miss the humidity and the cold winters. It balances out.

        • Wildkitty

I think I’ve told you that, if things had worked out differently for me, I would be living in Arizona – Maybe around Tucson – or up around Prescott.
But, I agree, small towns are ‘the best’ and they don’t come much smaller than this one – less than 500 great folks. My breathing can tolerate the cold (without the wind) much better than it can tolerate the humidity.

          Enjoy daughter’s visit.

        • BuckeyeB

LOL! Haven’t thought of Andy Devine in ages, but I can still hear his voice & see him bouncing along in Ol’ Nellybelle!

      • BuckeyeB

Oh, Mary…I’ve been afraid to ask how he was doing, no news being good news. Spoil him all you can, see what the vet has to say, & know that you’ve done the very best for him from the moment he moved himself into your heart…he knows.

Glad you have family coming…how long has it been since you’ve seen them? As we always tell each other in my circle of family & friends, they aren’t coming to be entertained or conduct a white glove inspection, they’re coming for the camaraderie.

I promise not to call the deli!

    • Nowhere Man

Don’t know if this only works for ‘mods’, but try going to the black ‘WordPress’ bar at the top of the page after you log onto ALA, & click on the rectangular icon following ‘Like’. • Nowhere Man

“WordPress” doesn’t appear on my page. Could just be my browser (Safari).

          • BuckeyeB

Do you ‘log in’ to ALA? “WordPress’ just shows up as a ‘W’ on the far left of the black bar that shows up after you do…or at least it does after I do!

Hi, BB – Computers are my nemesis and disqust just adds to my frustration when trying to navigate around the net universe. – It is like tossing the dice when I open a link to an article. Sometimes when I go back to the site, IT (whoever or whatever IT is!) returns me to the exact post that had the link. Other times IT goes back to the very top of all the comments. – And then sometimes IT won’t go back at all and when I select close just this tab, IT closes everything. :(

Yet what would we do without these creators of chaos? Although IT can be unreliable and unpredictable, the net has brought us all closer and provided an astounding array of instant information. – I wonder if libraries will ever become obsolete? And I watch as my newspaper keeps getting smaller and thinner. This past year, a notice came on holidays that there would not be a paper printed – just available on their net site.

Anyway – via the net and disqust – sending Hello and Hugs! to you! :)

    • BuckeyeB

      Hey, A-1!
I think IT stands for a whole lot of words we TRY not to use…although disqust tries my patience pretty hard! I’m really starting to be concerned about computer age life, for my g’daughter’s sake & those to come. I see them glued to a screen & missing so much of the life going on around them. I’m afraid their legs are gonna atrophy & be replaced by their thumbs!
I still use my library a lot, but even that’s starting to aggravate me…I make sure to let them know how much, every time they get new books that are only available in e-versions. What am I supposed to do with all my bookmarks?!
Oh, well…enough curmudgeoning. It’s always so good to see you’ve stopped by. I hope you have a great Fall, especially your two weeks with your daughter. You’ll have to be sure to take her some leaves, if they’ve turned by then. That was one of the things I missed the most when I lived in the South & California…the tang in the air & the colors of Fall.

Hi, RB – I wish my cat would sleep on my lap, she only sits there begrudgingly for a minute or so and then jumps away. Yet she is very playful – all I have to do is say “Where is mousie?” and her ears perk up and she starts looking for her toy mouse. – One time I found 4 toy mice under the cabinet in my dining room, way in the back by the wall. I had to use a yardstick to get them out. She watched me the entire time and pounced on them the minute I pushed them out. – I also found some dust bunnies hiding under that cabinet. ;)

We will be going to a cabin on the lake in our nearby state park for a few days at the end of the month, just fishing and relaxing. :) Then we are going to San Diego for two weeks at the beginning of October to visit my older daughter and SIL. It will be the first time to see their first home – and the first time in over a decade to take a two week vacation! – Did I mention that I am counting the days until I board the plane to San Diego? ;)

Sending good wishes across the net universe to you and your family, take care. :)

    • Red Balloon

Hey Aquarius! My oldest daughter lives in Tustin. Not sure I ever mentioned that. She usually visits us two or three times a year so I really have no desire right now to visit her. I did drive her to LA back in 2012 when she moved there. That was a long drive from Iowa, but we had a lot of fun. We haven’t taken a two week vacation in many years. I’m not sure I want to right now. It’s so hard when I get back to work. You have a great time in SD!

Can’t get outside because of high winds. The sun is great and temps only about 68 but with my breathing problems, the damn wind takes my breath away – which is a bit inconvenient. So, I took care of a bunch of veggies (supplied by my neighbor) and they are cooling before they go into the freezer and, for the last hour I’ve been lazing on the sofa with one cat on the ottoman by my feet and another at the other end of the sofa. No idea with No. 3 is – but I would bet he’s outside. And so, Sunday talking heads and remembrances kept me busy until I dozed and now I’m going to ‘binge watch’ the Mentalist which my DVR picks up every week (I’ve got 7 available to watch) while I do some knitting!
This getting old is ‘a bit old’ – and I miss being my old invincible self.

Hi, Wildkitty – My husband said that he is getting tired of the “talking heads” and ready for the election to be done. I get tired as well of listening to the pathetic proclamations of political pundits – yet sometimes there is a small glimmer of truth. I miss Walter Cronkite and when the news was actually the news, not just a parade of biased opinions.

Sometimes I want to say to these journalists…..I don’t give a d*mn what you think MIGHT be important! And I don’t give a d*mn about your suspicions, your allegations and your arrogant so-called interpretations of events and people. – Okay, I am done venting about our news media. ;)

Thinking of you up north there in Maine (at least up north from western PA!), soon harvest time and my favorite season will be here. – We once did a “binge watch” of Battlestar Galactica, we both love sci-fi! – Stay safe and take care. :)

Well, Hello there Aquarius. Long time no see. Hope all is well.
I too, get tired of the ‘talking heads’ but, since I live alone, I consider my TV to be ‘talking wallpaper’! I don’t WATCH much during the day – and instead have ‘voices’ talking to me. However, if I hear something that interests me, I stop what I’m doing and sit down with my coffee for 10 minutes – or half hour – to try to ‘learn’ something. C-Span and C-Span2 are my all time favorite weekday ‘daytime’ channels – but on Sundays I get ‘both sides of the stories’ so I can make up my own mind – which is always somewhere in the middle. Like you, I miss the Edward Murrows and Walter Cronkites and Sander Vanocurs. Actually, I’m sorry that Al Jazeera America left us because they had ‘straight news’! Now, I’m done about out news media.
I’ve never been interested in Sci Fi – but I love the ‘Who Done It’ shows (Matlock, Murder She Wrote, Numbers, Mentalist, NCIS, etc.). I seldom find the time to watch a 2 hour movie – so I DVR the 1 hour shows, fast forward thru the commercials and turn them into 45 minute shows – to keep up with my ‘attention span’!

Blue used to watch the Mentalist. I didn’t know it was still on. She also has a respiratory infection and will probably go in to the doctor today. She had pneumonia a year ago and we don’t want to take any chances.

Please tell Blue to take care of herself. I ended up in the hospital for a few days at about this time last year. But I avoided full blown pneumonia. However, being COPD (chronic asthma/bronchitis) I’m learning not to be foolish when the weather is wrong!
