Gold Star Father Rebukes Kelly for Treating Soldiers’ Deaths as ‘Political Football’

by Julia Conley – “Former General Kelly indulged in defending the behavior of the president and made the situation even worse,” said Khizr Khan. Khizr Khan, the father of an Army captain who was killed in 2004 in Iraq, sharply criticized White House chief of staff John Kelly on Sunday’s edition of Face the Nation for defending President Trump’s treatment of Gold Star families over the past week. Khan has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump since the 2016 election, when he spoke at the Democratic National Convention about Trump’s racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric. On Sunday he turned his attention to Kelly, who on Thursday waded into the controversy over Trump’s call to the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, one of the four soldiers killed in Niger this month. Khan accused Kelly and the White House of turning the deaths of Johnson and his fellow soldiers into a “political football.” Watch: In his press conference,...

White House’s Message to the Nation After Las Vegas Massacre: Don’t Discuss Gun Control

by Zack Ford – “The president has been clear: He’s a strong supporter of the second amendment.” During Monday’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made clear the Trump administration is not interested in any immediate conversations on gun violence prevention legislation in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting that killed at least 58 and injured more than 500. “There’s a time and place for a political debate but now is the time to unite as a country,” Sanders said. Because an investigation is underway and a motive has not yet been determined, it would be “premature to discuss policy when we don’t know all the facts of what took place last night.” She likewise deemed it “premature” to call the shooting “domestic terrorism.” “I think that there will be certainly time for that policy discussion to take place, but that’s not the place that we’re in at this moment.”...

White House Clearly Wants the Justice Department to Investigate Comey, but to What End?

by Kerry Eleveld – White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders won’t say it outright, but the West Wing is pushing the Department of Justice to investigate former FBI Director James Comey. After Sanders defended Donald Trump’s decision to fire Comey with a litany of accusations on Tuesday, she followed up during Wednesday’s press briefing by outlining the makings of a legal rationale, however thin, for prosecuting him. “The memos that Comey leaked were created on an FBI computer while he was the director,” she began, referring to a memo Comey shared with a personal friend that was later leaked to the New York Times. “He claims they were private property, but they clearly followed the protocol of an official FBI document, leaking FBI memos on a sensitive case regardless of classification violates federal laws including the privacy act, standard FBI employment agreement and nondisclosure agreement all personnel must sign. I think that’s pretty clean and...

Trump Met With Russian Ambassador Friday & Now White House is Lying About It

by ursulafaw – Who do you believe is more credible, Reuter’s, Russian TV, or Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Before you decide, read about the meeting that Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov says that he had last Friday with Donald Trump, which Sanders said never took place. Reuters: “I was received by President Trump, I presented my credentials. For my part I said that we are looking forward to an improvement in the relations between our two countries,” Tass news agency quoted the ambassador, Anatoly Antonov, as saying. “President Trump received me in a warm and friendly way … The atmosphere was very genial, constructive and welcoming. At least, that was my personal feeling,” Russia’s RIA news agency quoted Antonov as saying. “We, together with his colleagues, his staff, agreed to continue our cooperation.” “I said that I look forward to working with the U.S government in the area of Russian-American mutual interests. And I...

The White House is Now Using James O’Keefe Videos to Attack the Press

by Zack Ford – This particular attack on the press garnered a response. At Tuesday’s White House press briefing, Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders used a question from Breitbart News to attack the entire press corps. Breitbart reporter Charlie Spiering asked about a specific story CNN retracted, but in her response, Sanders accused CNN of being “repeatedly wrong” on other stories, and encouraged people to watch an unverified video from James O’Keefe’s disreputable Project Veritas instead. “Frankly everybody across the country to take a look at it,” Sanders said of the video that was just released Tuesday morning. “I think it’s a disgrace to all of media, to all of journalism. I think that we have gone to a place where, if the media can’t be trusted to report the news, then that’s a dangerous place for America.” She went on to refer to the “Russia/Trump hoax,” suggesting that all of...
