Breitbart Goes to Bat for Roy Moore Amid Accusations He Sexually Assaulted Teenage Girl

by Jake Johnson – Breitbart’s piece on the accusations more closely resembled a “press release” for Moore than a news story, argued one journalist Minutes before the Washington Post on Thursday published a bombshell report detailing allegations by a woman who claims Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore sexually assaulted her when she was 14, the Steve Bannon-directed outlet Breitbart News ran a story that spotlighted Moore’s denials of the claims against him and attempted to “undermine the Post‘s credibility.” “The story detailed some of the allegations, but with a distinct twist,” notes Business Insider‘s Maxwell Tani. “Breitbart included five paragraphs of denials from Moore, which were placed above many of the details of the allegations.” Headlined “After Endorsing Democrat in Alabama, Bezos’s Washington Post Plans to Hit Roy Moore with Allegations of Inappropriate Relations with Teenagers; Judge Claims Smear Campaign,” Breitbart‘s piece more closely resembles a “press release” for Moore than a news story, argued the Washington Post‘s Aaron Blake. This is What Roy Moore has Said About Child Abuse and Sexual Assault

by Rebekah Entralgo – Moore has been accused of initiating sexual encounters with girls as young as 14. Republican candidate for Senate in Alabama, Roy Moore, initiated sexual abuse against underage girls as young as 14 years old, according to a bombshell report in the Washington Post published Thursday. Four women gave on-the-record interviews to the Post, accounts that were supported by roughly 30 other sources. Moore is known for his inflammatory rhetoric, particularly on “moral” and social issues.  Here is a round-up of his statements on sexual assault and child abuse. Moore was the only vote in favor of a day care worker who raped a 12-year-old, claiming there was no ‘implied threat of serious physical injury’. In 2015, while Moore was serving on the Alabama Supreme Court, he considered the case of Eric Lemont Higdon, a 17-year-old, who was convicted of raping a 12-year-old at a daycare center. Higdon was found guilty under...

by Walter Einenkel – This past week, the story of two veteran New York Police Department detectives “arresting” and raping an 18-year-old in the back of an unmarked vehicle while they were supposed to be on duty, gained some more serious national coverage. Now, the Daily News is reporting that after 6 weeks of hemming and hawing and wondering out loud if a person that has been arrested can even consider having “consensual sex” with the two arresting police officers, we finally have charges. Eddie Martins, 37, and Richard Hall, 33, of the Brooklyn South Narcotics unit, were arraigned Monday on a total of 50 charges, including first-degree rape, first-degree criminal sexual act and second-degree kidnapping, the district attorney’s office said.   Both detectives pleaded not guilty to all counts, according to the district attorney’s office. ‘Floodgates Are Opening’ as Allegations Against Powerful Men Reveal Scope of Sexual Assault and Harassment

by Jake Johnson – “Every sexual predator in every walk of professional life is—and should be—nervous that they will be exposed by this uprising.” As a slew of powerful and influential men—from former President George H.W. Bush to MSNBC political analyst Mark Halperin to filmmaker James Toback—are facing hundreds of new sexual assault and harassment accusations in the aftermath of the explosive and horrifying Harvey Weinstein revelations, activists and commentators are increasingly coming to believe that something of a “culture-rattling revolution” is underway, one that many hope will change the way such behavior is perceived, discussed, and addressed in the United States and around the world. “There is Harvey Weinstein-like behavior in every industry,” wrote Buzzfeed journalist Alex Berg. “The floodgates are just opening up.” “Harvey Weinstein will go down as an historic figure, just not for the reasons he assumed,” added Axios‘s Mike Allen. “His outing as a sexist, dangerous pig triggered an uprising rarely seen: Abused women feel liberated to bring down powerful...

NYPD Cops are Smearing a Victim Accusing Them of Rape to Avoid Indictment

by Adrienne Masha Varkiani – “Without commenting on this ongoing investigation, defense counsel’s characterization of how a rape victim should behave is inaccurate, inappropriate and demeaning.” Two New York Police Department officers accused of raping a teenager while on duty are smearing the victim’s credibility over her social media posts and ideas of how a rape victim should behave, according to a letter obtained by the New York Post. The teenager, who goes by the name “Anna Chambers” online and isn’t using her legal name in press, said she was raped by Brooklyn narcotics detectives Richard Hall and Edward Martins on September 15. Chambers said she was driving with two of her friends, and after being pulled over by the detectives, her car was searched. The cops found a bag of drugs next to Chambers, and one on her friend’s person. Chambers says they then handcuffed her and drove her to a Chipotle...

Trump Being Subpoenaed for All Documents Related to Accusations of Sexual Assault

by Mark Sumner – Buzzfeed reports that the streak of powerful men being called to account for their sexual assaults on women is not over. A high-stakes legal showdown is brewing for President Donald Trump, as a woman who said he groped her has subpoenaed all documents from his campaign pertaining to “any woman alleging that Donald J. Trump touched her inappropriately.” Successful businesswoman and restaurant owner Summer Zervos appeared as a contestant on Donald Trump’s television show, The Apprentice, during it’s 2007 season. Zervos was the first person “fired” from the season — but only after, according to Zervos, Trump sexually assaulted her. In addition to twice forcing her into a kiss, Zervos says that Trump  … “Came at me and started kissing me open-mouthed as he was pulling me towards him. “He then grabbed my shoulder and began kissing me very aggressively and placed his hand on my breast.” Zervos’ subpoena was made in March,...

Hundreds of German Choir Boys Abused

Victims describe time at prison-like school as marked by helplessness and fear, says lawyer probing cases. Priests and teachers physically or sexually abused more than 500 boys at a Catholic choir school in Germany between 1945 and 1992, according to a report. Allegations in Tuesday’s report involving the Domspatzen choir at the Regensburg Cathedral Sparrows school were among a spate of revelations of abuse by Roman Catholic clergy in Germany that emerged in 2010. Many of the 547 victims remembered their time at the school as “the worst time of their lives, marked by fear, violence and helplessness”, said lawyer Ulrich Weber, who was commissioned two years ago by the diocese to probe the cases. The victims said the school was “prison, hell and a concentration camp”, he added. The report counted 500 cases of physical violence and 67 of sexual violence, committed by a total of 49 perpetrators. The lead investigator criticised...

Judge Declares Mistrial in Bill Cosby Sexual Assault Case

by Jessica Goldstein – The hung jury deliberated for over 50 hours. The prosecution presented its case in four-and-a-half days. The defense took all of six minutes. The criminal trial of Bill Cosby, a once universally-beloved pop cultural icon now accused by nearly 60 women of sexual misconduct, came to a close on Monday afternoon. Then the jury began to deliberate. Fifty-two hours later, the jury could not reach a verdict. Judge Steven O’Neill declared a mistrial. Andrea Constandt alleges Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her at his home in 2004. Cosby was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault; if convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison. But after days of deliberations, during which the jury asked O’Neill a dozen questions and had several lengthy police interviews, depositions, and witness testimonies reread back to them — including the entirety of Constandt’s testimony regarding the alleged assault, which was 300...

Cosby Trial Begins With Aggressive Opening Statements and an Emotional First Witness

by Jessica Goldstein – A powerful first day for the only criminal case against Bill Cosby. The long-awaited criminal trial of Bill Cosby began on Monday with searing opening statements and the prosecution’s first witness, a woman who alleges Cosby drugged and raped her in 1996. Though nearly 60 women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct, only one filed criminal charges within the statute of limitations and has been able to take her case to court: Andrea Constand, who first pursued legal action against Cosby back in 2005, one year after she claims he drugged and sexually assaulted her at his home in a Philadelphia suburb. Cosby stands accused of three counts of aggravated indecent assault and, if convicted, could spend ten years in prison. After over an hour of opening instructions from Judge Steven O’Neill, prosecutor Kristen Feden kicked off opening statements. Her refrain: Most of the facts of the case...

Trump says Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Bill O’Reilly are all Lies

by Zack Ford – Happy National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month! In a new interview with the so-called “failing” New York Times, President Trump came to the defense of Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. According to an investigation by the Times, Fox News and O’Reilly have paid at least five women a total of about $13 million to quell sexual harassment claims. Though dozens of advertisers have abandoned the his show over the claims, Trump apparently has his back. “I think he’s a person I know well — he is a good person,” Trump told the Times. O’Reilly has interviewed Trump many times over the years. The President went on to say, “I think he shouldn’t have settled; personally I think he shouldn’t have settled. Because you should have taken it all the way. I don’t think Bill did anything wrong.” It’s unclear whether Trump has ever discussed the accusations with O’Reilly...

‘Shocking’ Scale of Catholic Church Sex Crimes Revealed

More than 1,250 Catholic priests accused of child sex abuse in Australia with few allegations pursued in cover-up drive. About seven percent of Catholic priests in Australia were accused of sexually abusing children between 1950 and 2010, but few allegations were investigated, an inquiry in Sydney has heard. The scathing figures, released as hearings began on Monday over the allegations dating back decades, were compiled with the cooperation of the church as part of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The commission, Australia’s highest level of inquiry, reported 4,444 alleged incidents of sexual abuse by Catholic priests between 1980 and 2015. The inquiry also heard that 1,265 priests and religious brothers and nuns had been accused during a 60-year period ending 2010. “These numbers are shocking. They are tragic and they are indefensible,” Franklin Sullivan, head of the church’s Truth, Justice and Healing Council, told the commission in Sydney....

Donald Trump Plans 100 Days of Bloody Vengeance, Promises to Sue Women who Accused Him

by Mark Sumner – Donald Trump visited the site of the most memorable speech in American history on Saturday morning  to give a speech that in its way was also particularly memorable. Memorable partly for its darkness, over-the-top-invective, and warnings against zombie voters. Trump, who has accused opponents of rigging the election against him, again raised the specter of voter fraud. He said — without evidence — that “1.8 million dead people are registered to vote, and some of them are voting.” But what Trump’s Gettysburg speech will be most remembered for is promises of sweet, sweet revenge. Billed as a “positive policy speech” with the “aim of putting controversy behind him and focusing on the actions of his first 100 days in office,” Trump instead rambled away from the TelePrompTer to rant about the system being rigged, about Hillary Clinton being a criminal somehow in cahoots with the FBI, and about the media “poisoning” American voters against him. And it turned into promises...

Calls to Sexual Assault Helplines Spike in Wake of Trump Scandal

by Lauren C. Williams – Following in footsteps of women who claim Donald Trump assaulted them, other survivors are seeking help. The mounting sexual assault and harassment allegations against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump have had an impact beyond news headlines and declining poll numbers: Women have been flooding the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) call center to seek help for their trauma. RAINN’s live chat helpline has reportedly seen a 33 percent spike over the past week and calls to the telephone hotline are up 35 percent since news was reported of Trump openly discussed trying to bed a married woman, forcibly kissing beautiful women, and grabbing their genitals on a hot mic for Access Hollywood. The recording has brought more attention to Trump’s history of sexual assault and harassment allegations, including at least one lawsuit filed by a former employee, Jill Harth. Harth’s 1997 complaint detailed multiple unwanted...
