Will Trump Pardon Notorious Sheriff Arpaio? Trump Rally Raises Tensions in Phoenix

by Andrea Germanos – “Trump pardoning Arpaio would be an official presidential endorsement of racism,” says the ACLU. The people of Phoenix, Arizona are mobilizing ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit to the city on Tuesday—a week after he defended white supremacists—amid speculation over whether he will announce at the rally a presidential pardon for Joe Arpaio, the notorious former sheriff of Maricopa County. Thousands are expected to show up to protest the president’s visit, with a number of events planned including the Puente-organized “White Supremacy Will Not Be Pardoned” evening rally. The local human rights group said on its Facebook page: “we want to send a very clear message that we will not pardon white supremacy the way has done so with #Charlottesville and now with Joe #Arpaio.” Trump told Fox News last week that he is “seriously considering a pardon” for 85-year-old Arpaio, who was convicted last month by a federal judge of criminal contempt for violating a 2011 court order...

Facing Tough Re-Election, Sheriff Joe Says He’s Still Investigating Obama’s Birth Certificate

by Ryan Denson – Even though Donald Trump (sort of) dropped the ‘birther’ issue, there’s one pro-Trump surrogate who – in the tightest re-election fight of his life – is still pledging to continue his investigation into President Obama’s birth certificate. Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently recommended for criminal court due to the continuation of racial profiling and perjury, told a group of Tea Party activists that he is certain Barack Obama’s birth certificate is forged and will do everything he can to prove it: “I’m not going to give up, and we’re looking into it. I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. I don’t care where he’s from. We are looking at a forged document. Period. I had nothing to do with Trump on the birth certificate. We did it on our own, because of you guys.” The room of 200 or so activists were of course energized by Arpaio’s pledge...

Sheriff Arpaio Referred by Federal Judge to District Attorney for Criminal Contempt Charges.

by jpmassar – Oops. A federal judge said Friday that he will refer Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to the U.S. Attorney’s Office to be charged with criminal contempt of court. The decision comes after U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow found that Arpaio intentionally violated various orders rooted in an 8-year-old racial-profiling case.  It seems that civil contempt wasn’t sufficient… In May, Snow found Arpaio, Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan, Lt. Joe Sousa and former aide Brian Sands in civil contempt of court for violating three of the orders within a class-action racial-profiling case… Snow talked about how Arpaio’s aides may be subject to a number of penalties — including termination — under the civil-contempt finding. But because Arpaio was an elected official, options for the one Snow had found “most culpable” were more limited. “The one person I can’t put at risk (to have) skin in the game is your client,” Snow...

Sheriff Joe Costs Arizona $200 Million Just Being Himself

by Walter Einenkel – Sheriff Joe Arpaio is famous for his fiscal conservatism. Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials misspent $99.5 million in restricted jail funds over the last eight years, according to a Wednesday morning briefing by county budget officials who spent the past six months researching the issue.Budget officials said $84.7 million was misspent from the detention fund, while another $14.8 million in inmate-services funds were misspent. Sheriff Joe is famous for his tough but Solomon-like fairness in how he treats the citizens of Maricopa County. A federal judge ruled Friday that the office of America’s self-proclaimed toughest sheriff systematically singled out Latinos in its trademark immigration patrols, marking the first finding by a court that the agency racially profiles people. The decision by U.S. District Judge Murray Snow in Phoenix backs up years of allegations from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s critics who say his officers violate the constitutional rights of...

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, On Behalf Of Himself, Brings Federal Lawsuit Against President Obama On Immigration

by DEBI JOHNSON-CHAMP – “‘Sue him! Impeach him!” Really? For what? You’re going to sue me for doing my job? I mean think about that — you’re going to use taxpayer money to sue me for doing my job, while you don’t do your job? Huh.”     ~President Obama. Austin, Texas, July 10, 2014. And the internet is now lit up with news that many have set about suing the President for doing his job. Yesterday, on social media, I spotted an angry tirade by a relative of mine. She was, according to her post, suffering high blood pressure, was “angry” and had an emoticon with an angry frowning face to prove it. She currently lives in Arizona. She is neither a democrat nor a republican. She has a big heart for veterans, children living in poverty and LGBT issues as long as the individuals are citizens. She has no space...

What else is new? Joe Arpaio costs taxpayers another $975,000

By Mother Mags, Daily Kos – In the broader scheme of shitty things, this ain’t much, just another $975,000 that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has cost taxpayers for his unethical and at times illegal shenanigans. Monday the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals released its decision that Maricopa County must pay the nearly $1 million tab to former County Commissioner Mary Rose Wilcox, who filed suit against Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas. The Arpaio-Thomas tag team had targeted Wilcox in a 2009 corruption investigation, which also resulted in charges being filed against fellow County Commissioner Don Stapley. Late last year he received a $3.5 million settlement. Wilcox and Stapley were two commissioners who did not approve of Arpaio’s “sweeps” and similar police state practices. For having the gall to speak out publicly against the sheriff’s racial profiling and other racist techniques, Wilcox, Stapley and others were targeted by Arpaio and Thomas, who brought a...
