The lawmaker, who suffered the beating, made national news in 2013 after he bragged about smashing homeless people’s shopping carts with a sledgehammer. In 2013, Rep. Tom Brower (D) made a name for himself for all the wrong reasons when he targeted Hawaii’s most vulnerable citizens. The lawmaker walked through the streets of Honolulu like a tough guy with a sledgehammer, and declared that he would smash any shopping cart that didn’t have the name of a store on it: “If I see shopping carts that I can’t identify,” he told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser at the time, “I will destroy them so they can’t be pushed on the streets.” What a gem, right?
