Texas Rep. Gets Arrested For Gun In Airport, So He Makes It Legal To Carry Guns Into Airports

Rep. Drew Darby

Rep. Drew Darby speaks to the Texas House.

The trope of pro-gun people everywhere is that there is something called “responsible gun owners.”

Responsible gun owners don’t kill people, the argument goes. Responsible gun owners don’t leave guns around where little children can accidentally get ahold of them.

It’s hard to believe that a responsible gun owner would somehow forget that they are taking their responsible gun into an airport, but that’s what we’re being told by a “responsible” Texas legislator who did that very thing and he wants to make sure that no one ever gets arrested again for taking a gun into an airport, like he did.

Republican Rep. Drew Darby was charged with a felony in 2013 when he forgot he had his loaded firearm packed in his carry-on luggage. Yes, he packed it and claimed he forgot he packed it. It was detected when he tried to go through security at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

According to reports, “responsible gun owner” Darby forgot he had his gun with him. So, his colleague Drew Springer introduced a bill that would make it okay to forget about your gun, provided you’re a licensed concealed carry holder.

Because it’s Texas, the bill sailed right through the House. Airline passengers wouldn’t be able to take their guns past security, but they would not be arrested if security caught it.

Apparently, this sort of thing happens a lot, especially in Texas.

In the Lone Star State, it seems almost as common for travelers in airport security lines to forget they are carrying a handgun as it is for them to fail to take off their belts or shoes; Texas leads the U.S. in gun confiscations in airport security checks. These confiscations spiked 25 percent last year; the Transportation Safety Administration confiscated 2,212 guns at airports in 2014, including 350-plus in Texas.

The bill still has to go through the state Senate, but it is Texas, so look for its passage. As for our “responsible gun owner” Darby, well, his charges were dismissed, of course.
