The Sunday Funnies and Factoids

Front_page_bobWelcome back one and all to the latest installment of the Sunday funnies and factoids.  I hope everyone had a great week and an even better weekend.

I awoke this morning to snow blowing sideways with gusting winds so strong that no one is venturing outside today…. praying that my satellite feed holds out for the NFL Conference Championship games later on this afternoon.  Okay, running down the list……. Booze…check, Herb…check, Teams picked for my pool…check, Taco filling cooking on the stove…check, More booze…check.  Okay, I’m good.  Have a great Sunday everyone.  Hope your teams dominate today.

1) The French Kiss isn’t from France; it’s actually a slur against the nation. In the 1920s, the English derided the French as the kind of people who’d go around sticking their tongues where they didn’t belong.

2) The toilet featured in Hitchcock’s Psycho was the first flushing toilet to appear on-screen.

3) It doesn’t matter how fresh-picked they are, coffee beans are actually tasteless until they’re roasted.

4) Though the Ford Mustang uses a mustang pony as its logo, the car was actually named after the P-51 Mustang, a fighter plane from WWII.

5) For one week in 1986, Dan Rather experimented with a one-word sign off for each broadcast of the CBS Evening News: “Courage.” Reactions were mixed.  Dan was a knob even back then, I see.

6)  According to MIT alum Edward Lorez, It is impossible to predict weather more than three weeks ahead of time with any degree of certainty. This is derived from his studies into chaos theory in 1972. His paper was titled Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings in Brazil set off a Tornado in Texas?, from where the term “butterfly effect” evolved.

7) A ‘butt’ was unit of measurement in Medieval times.  It was used to measure wine and a ‘buttload’ was the equivalent of 125 gallons.  Nope, not touching it.  Could get into way too much trouble playing around with the ‘butt’.

8) The US Navy trained 36 dolphins in 2005 to kill terrorists.  They were armed with a toxic800px-Common_dolphins_blowing dart gun on one of their fins and became quite good with their aim.  Unfortunately, the dolphins went missing and have not been located since.  Okay, so we have a gang of well armed and potentially lethal dolphins roaming the oceans of the world.  Excellent.  The industrial military complex hard at work.

9) People who use a lot of curse words have been found to be much more honest and trustworthy according to multiple behavioral studies.  Excellent, I’m golden.
