Trump Contributes $0 to Campaign, Cheats Own Supporters
by Mark Sumner –
Every day, Donald Trump makes more false statements than most candidates manage in a year. Whether it’s promising that Mexico will pay for his ‘big, beautiful wall,’ or that manufacturing jobs will magically return, or that he has a secret plan for defeating ISIS, Trump’s campaign is built on lies.
Which makes it not all that surprising that he’s lying about how much of his own money he’s putting into his campaign. Despite promising to bankroll the campaign with $100 million of his “own money”—the source of which is completely unknown—he’s a long way from that target.
The Republican presidential nominee has given a mere $33,000 to his campaign this month. That means he needs to pony up another $44 million to fulfill the boast that’s become a familiar refrain in interviews and rallies over the past several days.
Actually, it’s worse than that. Donald Trump’s real cash contributions to his campaign was $0.
Mr. Trump contributed no cash and just $31,000 worth of rent and staff salaries to his campaign in the first three weeks of October, a fraction of the $2-million-a-month self-funding pace he had set since winning the Republican presidential nomination.
And Donald Trump is doing this at a point where he had promised to “triple match” contributions by his supporters.
Trump supporters: get used to it. This is great example of the kind of follow through your candidate makes on his promises.
While Trump is falling well short of what he promised, and routing money back to himself at every opportunity, he’s directly cheating those who give to his campaign.
Trump may still be sucking in money from the buyers of hats and T-shirts that swarm his rallies, but the insiders who can see what’s going on with his funding, are moving elsewhere.
Disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday revealed tens of millions of dollars in late donations and transfers to Republican “super PACs” focused on down-ballot races, suggesting a significant last-ditch effort to protect Senate and House candidates against Mrs. Clinton’s surge. Relatively little new money has come into outside groups supporting Mr. Trump.
Of course not. Not even Donald Trump is supporting Donald Trump.
Update: Kellyanne says Trump is going to come through! He’s going to dump it all on just 11 days.
So keep those donations coming in, folks. Donald Trump will follow up on his promises. You’ll see.
