Walmart Issues Apology For Making ISIS Flag Cake After Refusing Confederate Flag Design

Last week, Walmart became the first major retailer to take a stand against the Confederate flag after nine black churchgoers were shot dead by white supremacist Dylann Roof in Charleston, South Carolina. As the right-wing gunman had been a clear supporter of the Confederate flag, the retailer promptly removed Confederate flags from its stores to distance itself from the flag’s racist values. Due to its proactive stance, it was no surprise that the retailer recently turned down a customer who wanted a cake decorated like the Confederate flag – but what happened as a result is mind-boggling.

 Here’s the video:

Chuck Netzhammer went to a Louisiana Walmart to see if the store was really serious about its anti-Confederate message. He requested a Confederate flag cake, but was turned down. Netzhammer decided to challenge the store and request a cake decorated like the ISIS battle flag instead, and was shocked that the store was willing to fulfill that order. Armed with receipts, the rejection letter and the cake, Netzhammer took to YouTube to complain that Walmart was “alienating Southern Americans” while promoting terrorism.

Holding up the cake, Netzhammer asks:

“Walmart, can you please explain why you’re alienating southern Americans with this trash that you allow to be sold at your store, while at the same point, Confederate flag memorabilia is not allowed?”

Netzhammer zooms in on his receipts and hammers the store for making the ISIS cake. He argues that ISIS “is beheading Christians, selling little girls into slavery and is currently a terrorist org at war with the United States — but you can’t buy the General Lee toy car …? It’s a damn shame.”

Here’s the rejection letter for the Confederate flag design:

And here’s the ISIS cake receipt:

Netzhammer’s video caught the attention of many after it was posted, and Walmart issued an apology for the incident. Spokesman Randy Hargrove stated that the associate who accepted the ISIS flag order had no idea what the design was and the meaning behind it. Hargrove said,:

“Our local store made a mistake. The cake in the video should not have been made and we apologize. We made the decision to stop selling Confederate flag related items promoting the flag’s image. For that reason we did not make the cake.  [Netzhammer] brought in the other image of ISIS and really, what happened, was our associate didn’t recognize what that image was and what it meant or it wouldn’t have been made.”

Walmart was dead on to reject the Confederate flag cake request, but it’s ridiculous that the ISIS flag was able to get through the cracks. It’s hard to believe there are people who do not recognize the ISIS flag, as it’s been plastered all over the media and, of course, social media – but these mix-ups aren’t all that uncommon, apparently. After all, news channel CNN mistook a flag with sex toys on it for a legitimate ISIS flag just a few days ago!
