Wingnut Congressman Tells Fox News Americans Were ‘Just Fine’ Before Obamacare (VIDEO)

Out of all of the crazies and fanatics that make up the current Republican party, there are few, if any, who are crazier than Iowa Congressman Steve King.

King is on record making statements that make most sane people cringe, such as his defense of dog fighting, or his claim that most immigrants are drug smugglers. Now King is upset about the Supreme Court’s ruling on Obamacare, and of course he had some stupid things to say.

King appeared on Fox’s America’s News HQ on June 27, to talk about the Supreme Court rulings on Obamacare and marriage equality. Host Elizabeth Prann starts out by asking him to weigh in on the Obamacare ruling. Never one to avoid hyperbole, King says that he thinks Obamacare is “a malignant tumor that is metastasizing, and feeding on God-given American liberty.” Gosh, and here we thought it was a program that has reduced the number of uninsured Americans to the lowest level in years.

According to King, Obamacare is a “multi-trillion dollar abyss.” Funny, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says that repealing the law would cause the deficit to go down, but in the long term, getting rid of Obamacare would cause it to explode. Where King gets his “multi-trillion dollar” figure is anybody’s guess.

What do we do about health care if we get rid of the Affordable Care Act? King offers the typical Republican solutions. You know, all the ones that they could have proposed, after they shot down what they called “Hillarycare” some 20 years ago. All the ones they could have passed into law somewhere between January 2001 and January 2007, when they held control of all of Congress, as well as the White House.

King says that Republicans can’t get Democrats to work with them on things like allowing people to buy insurance across state lines, because “they want a state-sponsored single payer program.” An interesting statement, given that the tepid first step toward such a program, a “public option” for insurance, was one of the first things to be cut from the bill as it worked its way through congress.

King wraps up his comments on Obamacare by saying that Americans “were fine before they met Obamacare, and will get along fine without Obamacare.”

So, Steve King wants us to return to the pre-Obamacare days, and says we got along fine without it? Let’s take a little walk down memory lane, with former insurance executive Wendell Potter. Last October, Potter wrote a reminder of what life was like before Obamacare.

  • 82 percent of Americans (who were supposedly “fine” according to King) wanted the health care system overhauled.
  • 50 million Americans had no insurance.
  • Health care spending was dragging down the economy.
  • Hundreds of thousands were stuck in their jobs because they had to have the health care benefits those jobs offered.

Potter observes that while Obamacare is not reducing the numbers of the uninsured as fast as many would like, but without it, the number of uninsured would have risen to 57 million by 2022. And Steve King thinks we were “fine” before Obamacare came along.
